Sports: Port Townsend’s championship dream dashed by Archbishop Murphy

SILVERDALE — Port Townsend ran into the state’s longest football winning streak on Saturday night at Silverdale Stadium and added to the count.

Craig Duncan ran for 130 yards and was one of three Archbishop Murphy players to score two touchdowns as the Wildcats rolled Port Townsend 41-8 in the opening round of the Class 2A state playoffs.

“They’re good, I have to say that,” Port Townsend junior running back Sloan Gutierrez said after the loss.

Gutierrez, who entered the game with 1,253 rushing yards this season, was held to 62 yards on 14 carries. Keith Johnson, who had 1,163 rushing yards coming in, picked up just 45 yards on seven rushes.

“We knew they were going to be tough,” Gutierrez added.

The Wildcats (12-0) are the two-time defending state Class 1A champions. Archbishop Murphy is a private school in Everett that still has 1A enrollment numbers but this season moved up to Class 2A for tougher football competition and an easier travel schedule.
