SPORTS: Port Townsend wins first state tournament game; Quilcene loses at buzzer

YAKIMA — Joe Aase scored 14 points and Walker Wilson chipped in 11 as Port Townsend raced away from Granger 41-27 on Wednesday in the Class 1A boys state tournament.

The Redskins (21-3) put the game away in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Spartans 16-5.

Port Townsend shot 43 percent (17 of 40) for the game, including making 9 of 18 shots in the second half. Granger went cold after intermission and made just 3 of 12 shots.

Port Townsend took the lead for good on Aase’s basket for a 19-17 lead just before halftime.

Mychal Lopez and Mitchell Zapien paced Granger with seven points each.

SPOKANE — Daniel Duncan scored 11 points, including a game-winning 3-pointer with six seconds left, as Pe Ell beat Quilcene 47-44 in the first round of the Class 2B state tournament on Wednesday.

Pe Ell scored the last five points of the game and held Quilcene scoreless in the final three minutes to secure the win.

It was a heartbreaking loss for the Rangers, who were seeking their first-ever victory at the state tournament.

Hank Robinson added 11 points and Dillon Skeen had 10 for the Trojans (14-7), who will face White Swan (18-2) in the championship quarterfinals today.

Chris Bacchus scored a game-high 22 points, on 9-of-18 shooting, and was the only player to score in double-figures for the Rangers (16-4).

Quilcene led for most of the game, leading 12-9 after one quarter, 30-29 at halftime and 39-37 going into the fourth period.

The Trojans outscored the Rangers 10-5 in the final quarter.

Quilcene tries again for a state win today in a loser-out consolation quarterfinal game against Oroville (14-8) at 10:30 a.m.

Oroville had a tough lost in the first round Wednesday.

White Swan beat Oroville 63-59 to advance to the championship quarterfinals.
