PORT TOWNSEND — Class 1A Port Townsend shut out 2A rival Sequim 4-0 in a nonleague girls soccer game Tuesday night at Memorial Field.
It took only 30 seconds for the Redskins to take a 1-0 lead with Irina Lyons scoring on a Lydia Young assist.
“A great start set the tone for the game,” Port Townsend coach Colin Foden said.
Young put a through ball to Lyons, who rounded the goalkeeper and scored.
Young continued to slice open the Sequim defense and even rattled the bar twice with shots of her own.
“Audrey McHugh was also in the thick of things and scored two beautiful goals,” Foden said.
McHugh scored a goal at 7 minutes and a second one at 76 minutes.
Young and Jewel Johnson assisted on the McHugh goals.
“It was also a delight to see freshman Jewel Johnson smash a thunderous shot into the Sequim goal,” Foden said.
Johnson scored in the second half.
“It got a little physical in the second half, which temporarily disrupted our passing game but our goal was rarely troubled, and the array of solid organized defenders kept their opponents to a handful of shots,” Foden said.
“An excellent performance all around. We could have scored eight goals but we’re happy with four.”
Sequim turned the tables in the JV game, winning 2-1.
Port Townsend next plays at Kingston while Sequim hosts archrival Port Angeles in nonleague games Thursday night.
The Redskins play archrival Chimacum in a nonleague match Saturday at Memorial Field starting at 1 p.m.
Port Angeles 5, North Mason 0
PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders (2-1) outshot the Bulldogs 21-5 to dominate the nonleague game Tuesday night.
In girls soccer and volleyball, the first four games and matches against Olympic League opponents are actually noncounting nonleague competition.
The Riders led North Mason 2-0 at halftime and never looked back.
Freshman Brittany McBride scored two goals while Kathryn Moseley had a goal and three assists,
Adding goals were Caylie Cook and freshman Kaitlin Boston while Paxton Rodocker and Lauren Corn had assists.
McBride was named offensive player of the game for her two goals while Moseley was picked as transition player of the match for her three assists.
“Brittany’s two goals were pretty impressive for a freshman,” coach Scott Moseley said.
Rodocker was named defensive player of the game.
“Paxton cleaned up on defense,” Scott Moseley said. “She had a great, solid game.”
The Rider JV beat North Mason 8-0.
Port Angeles next plays at archrival Sequim in a nonleague game Thursday night.
Chimacum 2, Life Christian 1
CHIMACUM — The Cowboys played their Nisqually League and home opener as they held on for the win against the Life Christian Eagles on Tuesday.
Emma King, coming off of a hat trick against Forks, scored Chimacum’s first goal of the game in 30 minutes off an assist from Haily Beres to go into the half leading 1-0.
King came out strong, finding the net on a loose ball just five minutes into the second half to put the Cowboys on top 2-0.
The Eagles, however, tried battling back by scoring their only goal with 15 minutes left in the game.
“We have some young players that are still learning,” Chimacum coach Stan Berdinner said.
“But we had a good team effort with everyone stepping up.”
Cowboy goalkeeper Kailey Castillo played strong, earning three saves.
Chimacum is on the road today in a league game against the Orting Cardinals.

PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders (1-0) opened up the 2010 season on a strong note Tuesday night.
The first four Olympic League opponents are nonleague affairs for the Riders and other league teams.
That means the Riders match at archrival Sequim on Thursday night is just for pride since this also is nonleague competition.
Port Angeles beat the Bulldogs 25-21, 26-24, 27-25. The Riders had to come from behind in the last two games.
“North Mason came out tough,” Port Angeles coach Christine Halberg said. “They are much better than they were last year.
“I’m very proud of how our girls came from behind in games two and three.”
Danielle Rutherford led the Riders with 12 kills, six digs and an ace while going a perfect 18-for-18 in serving.
Kiah Jones also had a strong outing with 12 kills, seven digs and a block while going 11-for-11 in serving.
Setter Emily Drake had 28 assists, six kills and three digs while Laney Boyd earned seven digs.
The Rider JV team beat North Mason 2-1 by 25-7, 19-25, 25-19 scores while the C team swept 25-6, 25-14, 25-9.
Forks 3, Tenino 0
FORKS — The Spartans (1-0 in Southwest Washington League, 2-1 overall) dominated Tenino on Tuesday.
Forks won 25-18, 25-18, 25-11.
Raven McCann led with five kills while Whitney Fairbanks and Casey Williams had four kills each.
Setter Jillian Raben dished out 23 assists while Alisha Shaw served four aces.
The Spartans next host Elma in another league match Thursday night.
Boys Tennis North Kitsap 4, Port Angeles 3
POULSBO — The Roughriders lost an Olympic League heartbreaker to the Vikings on Monday.
“We knew North Kitsap was going to be a challenge because they only lost two players off their championship team from a year ago,” coach Brian Gundersen said.
“We had our chances and our guys battled, but we came up just short.”
Winning for the Riders were: Hayden McCartney defeated Sebastion Ford 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 singles; Connor Reid defeated Tyler Swansboro 7-5, 1-6, 6-2 at No. 3 singles; and A.J. Konopaski/Sam Beasley defeated Alex Olson/Zack Turley 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 at No. 1 doubles.
Gundersen singled out Reid as the player of the match.
“I thought Connor played his best match of the year, by far.
“After losing the second set, he came out determined to get the win, and he was very impressive today.”
The Riders host North Mason on Wednesday afternoon.
