PORT TOWNSEND — Port Townsend rode four pins to nudge Sequim in an Olympic League wrestling match Thursday night.
The Redskins held off the youthful Wolves 42-32.
Sequim had three pins of its own and a technical fall but a forfeit at 215 pounds was the difference in the dual meet, Sequim coach Len Borchers said.
“The meet went back and forth,” Borchers said.
Sequim’s 215-pounder was ill, and the six forfeit points swung the meet to the Redskins.
Earning crucial pins for Port Townsend were Ryan Unbedacht at 135 pounds, Mel Horton at 145, Brett Johnson at 160 and Jake Shaw at 189.
Others winning matches for the Redskins were Justin Mead at 112, Ryan Hubbard at 130 and Mitch Thurman at 215 with the forfeit.
Taking falls for Sequim were Mustang Riggins at 140, Dakota Hinton at 152 and Joe Pizzuto at 171.
Derek Fruin won by technical fall at 119 by a score of 17-2.
Austin Middleton won 4-1 at 125 pounds and Brian Bearden won by injury default for the Wolves.
“We’ll be seeing Port Townsend again [today and Saturday at Sequim’s own] Rainshadow Tournament,” Borchers said.
Boys Swimming Port Angeles 115, Kingston 64
PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders swept both the 200-yard freestyle and the 1-meter diving events while placing first in 11 of the 12 events Thursday afternoon.
Ben Flowers was a double event winner with first-place finishes in the 100 butterfly in a time of 58.51 seconds, and the 100 backstroke in 1 minute, 1.56 seconds.
John Christian took first in the 200 free with a time of 2:02.67 and qualified for the event at the district meet, as well.
C.J Urnes placed first in the 500 free in a time of 5:54.55 while setting a personal best time.
Charlie Parks was tops in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:14.17 while placing second in the 200 free.
Austin Fahrenholtz led the Riders in diving, scoring a total of 206.85 points.
The 200 medley relay team, consisting of Tyler Burke, Nick Peterson, Parks, and Flowers, cruised to victory in 1:54.84, finishing nearly 20 seconds faster than the Kingston team.
Burke also won the 50 free in a time of 25.30.
Conner Reid, Josh Mabrey, Urnes and Flowers swam a fast 400 free relay to win easily in 4:19.80.
The Riders are 5-0 in dual meets this season.
Next up, Port Angeles hosts Olympic on Tuesday.
Sequim splits double-dual meet
BREMERTON — The Wolves won their match-up against Klahowya 120-53 while losing narrowly to Olympic 97-85 in Olympic League boys swimming Thursday.
Thomas Moores was a double winner, taking first place in the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 1 minute, 12.87 seconds and the 50 freestyle event with a very fast 24.48 time.
Parker Steichen swam the 200 individual medley in 2:37.65 for first-place honors.
Tanner Estep won the 100 backstroke race with ease in a time of 1:17.10.
Duncan Skinner, Kris Petersen, Michael Okamoto, and Estep combined for a 2:17.64 200 medley relay time to take first place.
Noe Calderon, Triston Cortani, Moores and Steichen cruised to victory in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:45.35.
Ezra Perkins led all divers with 185.10 points while Zach Springer scored 153.75 to take second.
The Wolves travel to North Kitsap on Tuesday.
Boys Basketball Sequim 58, North Kitsap 57
SEQUIM — The Wolves pulled out a nail-biter Thursday night thanks in large part to Clancy Catelli’s two final-minute 3-pointers.
Catelli’s second 3 came with just 3.8 seconds left in the game to seal the win for Sequim (4-2 in league, 4-4 overall). He finished the night with 10 points.
John Textor led all scorers with 18 points while Corbin Webb sank 10 on the night.
“A couple of turnovers nearly cost us, but Catelli came up huge for us,” Sequim coach Greg Glasser said.
Bremerton will visit Sequim on Tuesday
