VASHON ISLAND — The Port Townsend High School football team remained undefeated with a 20-14 double overtime win over Nisqually League foe Vashon Island on Friday.
Nick Gallaway scored all three Redskins touchdowns, two on the ground and one on a pass from Isaiah Sather.
“I think that we had yet to face any kind of adversity,”‘ Port Townsend coach James Fleisher said.
“We went into the half at 7 and 7. Our kids have never experienced that this year.”
Entering Friday, Port Townsend (5-0 in league, 6-0 overall) was outscoring opponents 265-57 and ranked sixth in the state 2A poll.
Sloan Gutierrez picked up 62 yards rushing on 12 carries for the Redskins, who were held to 160 yards on the ground Friday night.
Vashon was led by Robert Bennedsen, who had 111 rushing yards.
“Their kids are darn good, tough, hard-nosed kids,” Fleisher said. “They played as good as they could the whole time.”
After the Redskins threw Vashon for two consecutive losses to start the second overtime, the PT offense took over.
Jeremiah Fountain had a 15-yard run to the 3-yard line, setting up Gallaway’s final score.
Port Townsend hosts Sequim this coming Friday night.
Sequim 17, Foster 14
SEQUIM — The 3A Wolves won a Nisqually League game on Friday thanks to solid defensive play.
Foster, a 2A team, scored its second touchdown with only 12 seconds left to play.
“In the second half our kids were in complete control both offensively and defensively,” Sequim head coach Bill Anderson said.
Tim Sutton led the Wolves with 149 yards rushing on 19 carries. Quarterback Kenny Hall was 6-for-16 passing for 51 yards.
Jerry Pedersen had seven unassisted tackles on the defensive side for Sequim (3-2 in league, 3-3 overall).
The Wolves did not turn over the ball. They recovered one fumble and had one interception.
