PORT TOWNSEND — The Port Townsend Braves swept the Port Angeles White teams Saturday afternoon in youth football action.
Chimacum football, meanwhile, won 2-of-3 games from the Forks Spartans on Saturday.
The Port Townsend Braves B team earned the No. 1 playoff seed and its fifth shutout of the year by a 27-0 score while the Port Townsend C squad also won by a shutout, 28-0, and the Braves A club won a 25-19 overtime thriller to stay alive in the playoff hunt.
The Braves C (6-7 years old) and A (11-12 years old) teams needed wins to stay in playoff contention.
The C team came out very aggressive on defense, stopping Port Angeles behind the line of scrimmage most of the game.
Ethan Brown had 10 tackles for loss and Melvin Tuulaupua and Payton Lake each had 10 solo tackles to complete the C team’s first shutout of the year.
Offensively, Lake scored twice and Bruce Seton scored his third touchdown of the year.
The youngest Brave team needs to win this Saturday against the Port Angeles Green team to make the playoffs as the fourth seed.
B TEAM ACTION
The Braves’ undefeated B squad (8-9 years old) continued its dominate play.
Carson Marx took the first play of the game 65 yards untouched into the end zone for a touchdown, and Matthew Widmer added the extra point.
Marx then scored his 14th touchdown of the year on the next possession, and Detrius Kelsall added the extra point.
Kelsall then threw a 30-yard pass to Austin Widmer, who made an amazing one-handed catch to score for the Braves.
Kelsall finished with five completions for 80 yards and a touchdown.
Berkley Hill took a run 28 yards for his 10th score of the year and Christopher Sevilla added the extra point.
Austin Widmer had an interception and led the Braves with 10 tackles.
The Port Townsend defense allowed only two first downs and 28 yards total offense. Kelsall and Matthew Widmer combined for 12 tackles and two sacks, and Isaiah Mason added two sacks for the Braves.
A TEAM PLAY
In a back-and-forth game that had six lead changes, an overtime and two goal-line stands, the Braves gained the A-team victory in dramatic fashion.
Alex Jones and Roberto Gomez Jr. rushed for touchdowns in regulation.
The defense for the Braves stopped Port Angeles on a goal-line stand with minutes left in the game to take it into overtime.
David Sua, Alex Martin, Ezra Easley, Alex Reierson, Luke Flannigan, C.J. Martin, Jones and Gomez all made big plays on defense.
Port Angeles started the overtime on offense but failed to score on four possessions.
The Braves only needed three plays to clinch the win when Gomez blasted up the middle for the score.
The Braves A squad needs one more win to clinch the final playoff spot.
The Port Townsend teams travel to Port Angeles on Saturday to finish the regular season.
Kickoffs are at noon, 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
CHIMACUM FOOTBALL
The Chimacum C squad lost to Forks, 13-0.
In a rain-soaked game, the Cowboys just could not get down the field.
However, the young Cowboys are still in the playoffs and have two weeks to ready themselves for either the Sequim Wolfpups or to meet the Forks Spartans again.
Cordell Mathews, Glenn Deckard and Kyle Eichmann played well for the Cowboys on defense.
Jacob Wade, Cole Dotson, Seth Naylor and Aaron Serrato all took turns trying to move the ball for the Cowboys.
B SQUAD GAME
The sun came to shine on the Cowboys B squad, though.
In a 21-0 victory on Saturday, Chimacum moved the ball well and played as a team.
Good down-field blocking by offensive linemen Jared McLaughlan, Austin Tuson Hayward, Josh Conklin and Lewis Seran provided Cowboy running backs room to get to the end zone.
Leading rushers for Chimacum were Peyton Hundley, Aidan Hartnett and Christopher Bainbridge. Juan Rogers caught a PAT for the Cowboys.
Defensively, Chimacum crashed the offensive line of Forks.
Lane Dotson, Dylan Glessing and Joseph Szczepanik stood out on defense.
First-year player Westen Johnson returned a kickoff for 30-plus yards, giving the Cowboys great field position to score again.
Jacob Bryant recovered a fumble for Chimacum.
The A-squad Cowboys won 30-28.
The B-squad Cowboys play at home Saturday against Sequim Purple at 2 p.m.
The other two Chimacum teams have a bye week.
