SPORTS: Port Angeles wrestlers come back from 23 down to stay perfect; other prep reports

KINGSTON — Never count the Port Angeles wrestling team out.

The Roughriders came roaring back after being behind 23-0 to shade Kingston 33-32 in Olympic League action Wednesday night.

Port Angeles rode five pins and a decision to outscore the powerful Buccaneers 33-9 down the stretch.

It wasn’t the Riders’ best effort of the season, coach Erik Gonzalez said.

Still, Port Angeles remains perfect at 3-0 in league and 7-0 overall.

After starting the dual meet at 145 pounds, the Riders were quickly down 23-0 before rallying with six straight wins, and then withstanding another late charge by Kingston.

The Bucs started out with two pins and a major decision before Kingston’s Bobby Reece held off Brian Cristion 6-4 in a battle of team stars at 170.

Kingston won the next two matches for the big lead before Roberto Coronel started the Port Angeles rally by beating Troy Brady 9-3 at 220 pounds.

Heavyweight Michael Myers then continued his hot streak after winning the Bonney Lake Classic tournament with four pins by pinning Kingston’s Mick Kane in 1:31 at 285.

Then the little guys took over as the Riders won another four straight at the lowest weight classes.

Tyler Gale started it off at 106 by pinning Matt Thomas in a speedy 22 seconds, and then Brady Anderson pinned Lyndsey Barnhill in 1:30 at 113.

Standout Josh Basden kept it going as he pinned Ivy Rodolf in 3:36 at 120 pounds.

Ozzy Swagerty made it five pins in a row with a fall in 1:15 against Payten Reece at 126.

Kingston won the next two matches by close scores for the final one-point difference.

The Bucs’ George Welldig shaded Gavin Crain 7-5 at 132 and then Kingston’s Nick Woltersdorf decisioned Sam Burton 7-5 in overtime at 138 to end the meet.

The Riders next travel to Bainbridge for the Island Invitational on Saturday with the action set to start at 9:30 am.

Girls Basketball

Neah Bay 61, Crescent 7

NEAH BAY — The Red Devils opened the North Olympic League season with a dominating win Wednesday night.

Neah Bay led 22-0 at the end of the first quarter and breezed to the win.

Faye Chartraw led four players in double figures with 20 points while Cierra Moss had 12, Kaela Tyler 11 and Blaire Hill 10.

Teya Williams had a high of four points for the Loggers.

Chartraw had a double-double with 11 rebounds to lead Neah Bay to a 7-1 overall record.

The Red Devils next play at Clallam Bay tonight.

QUILCENE — Freshman Megan Weller led the Rangers with a double-double twin of 14 points and 14 rebounds in SeaTac League action Tuesday night.

Weller also had eight assists and four steals.

The Rangers were short senior captain Andrea Lara due to a concussion but still played a solid defensive game.

Freshman Jerrica Viloria added nine points and two rebounds for Quilcene while sophomore Sammy Rae had seven points, seven rebounds and a blocked shot.

Eighth grader Katie Bailey had seven points, three rebounds, three assists and a steal while fellow eighth grader Allison Jones added five points and Bailey Kieffer had four.

The two teams had equal scoring in the second half as they scored 25 points each in the third and fourth quarters but Muckleshoot had a 43-21 advantage at halftime that held up for the win.

Boys Basketball

Neah Bay 63, Crescent 41

NEAH BAY — Leyton Doherty sparked the Red Devils with 18 points and eight rebounds in the opening game of the North Olympic League season Wednesday night.

Josiah Greene hauled in a game-high 13 boards as Neah Bay jumped out to a 20-4 lead and never looked back.

Zeke Greene scored eight points and grabbed eight boards while John Reamer netted nine points for the Red Devils.

Tyler McCaulley also swished in eight points.

Travis Walker scored a team-high eight points for Crescent while Derrick Findley added seven.

The Red Devils, 7-1 overall, next plays at rival Clallam Bay tonight.
