PORT TOWNSEND — Port Angeles erupted for six runs in the fifth inning to overrun Port Townsend 11-1 in an Olympic League baseball game Monday.
The Class 1A Redskins stayed with the 3A Roughriders through four innings.
Port Angeles was ahead only 2-0 when it took advantage of a pitching change and rallied to break the game open in the fifth.
The Riders remain undefeated in league at 3-0 and improve to 3-1 overall. The Redskins fall to 2-2 in league and 3-2 overall.
“Our wheels came off in the fifth,” Port Townsend coach Tom Webster said. “We wasted a pretty good effort by [starting pitcher] Ryan Aumock.”
Aumock gave up two runs on just three hits in four innings while striking out three.
“Aumock gave us four quality innings,” Webster said.
Port Angeles pitching, meanwhile, held the Redskins to one run on four hits.
A.J. Konopaski (1-1) threw the first four innings, earning the win, giving up no runs while fanning five.
Jared Tweter pitched the next three innings, earning six strikeouts of his own.
The youthful Port Angeles hitters had a field day, smacking out 16 hits.
Sophomore Kyler Morgan was 3-for-5 with two doubles and two RBIs, sophomore shortstop Derek Crain went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, two runs and a stolen base, and Justin Williams was 2-for-4 with a double and RBI.
Port Townsend, which won only one game last year, still is learning to be competitive, Webster said.
“Port Angeles is a quality team, and we’re still learning how to win,” he said. “We learned valuable lessons in this game.”
The Riders, meanwhile, are young with a lot of talented sophomores and a pitching staff that goes seven deep, Port Angeles coach Bob Withrow said.
Port Townsend shortstop Eric Thomas, a junior, had a good game, Webster said.
Both Port Angeles and Port Townsend play league games today before taking spring break off.
The Redskins will host Kingston at 4 p.m. while the Riders play North Mason at noon on Volunteer Field.
Port Townsend originally was scheduled to play at Kingston today but the game was moved to Port Townsend because of the poor condition of the Kingston field.

Sequim 7, North Mason 5
BELFAIR — Five runs in the sixth inning erased a 3-2 North Mason lead to give the Wolves the Olympic League victory Monday afternoon.
Senior Spencer Middleton’s pinch-hit two-run double gave Sequim the lead for good in the sixth.
Sophomore Drew Rickerson had a three-run homer in the sixth while junior Jeremie Oliver went 2-for-3.
Ace pitcher Alex Gillis (1-1), a junior, went the distance on the mound, scattering seven hits while striking out nine in the seven innings.
Sequim played a clean game with no errors while the Bulldogs had only one.
The Wolves, 1-3 in league and 2-4 overall, play at Bremerton today. The varsity and junior varsity teams play in a doubleheader with the JV game starting at 11:30 a.m. and the varsity contest following at about 1:30 p.m.

BELFAIR — The Bulldogs scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning with two outs in the Olympic League game Monday.
A double off the fence in the final inning was the difference in the evenly played game.
The Wolves scored three runs in the first and North Mason answered with three in the second, and it stayed that way until the seventh.
Pitchers Lauren Hendrickson and Demiree Briones (0-1) scattered eight hits.
Hendrickson gave up four hits and no earned runs while walking three in four innings.
Briones came in the fifth inning, allowing four hits in three innings while striking out three.
Madison Zbaraschuk had the big bat for the day with three RBIs and a double.
Cindy Miller was 2-for-3 while Hendrickson and Beverly Buck both were 1-for-3 each.
The Wolves don’t play again until next week.
Kingston 13, Port Angeles 9
PORT ANGELES — The hot-hitting Buccaneers held off the Roughriders in the Olympic League contest Monday.
The Riders, 2-1 overall and in league, stayed close to Kingston the whole game.
Amanda Wasnock had a strong game at the plate, going a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBIs and a run while Sasha Zichella was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a run.
Miranda Pitz went 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs while Dani Craver was 2-for-5 with two runs scored.
The Riders don’t play again until April 7 when they host the Klahowya Eagles.
