YELM — The Port Angeles girls soccer season ended with heartbreak after a subdistrict loser-out loss to Yelm on Tuesday night.
The Roughriders (6-8-1), who took great strides this year after struggling for a few seasons, lost 2-0 to the Tornadoes despite outshooting them in the playoff game.
“It was a good year for us,” coach Scott Moseley said. “Our big struggle this year has been getting from good to really good but we couldn’t quite get there.”
Port Angeles outshot Yelm 16-14.
“In many ways we outplayed them but they got two good scoring opportunities and they made them,” Moseley said.
Senior midfielder Abbie Moseley was named the offensive player of the year for several near goal misses.
“Abbie had a solid final game of her career,” Scott Moseley said.
Abbie Moseley ends her senior season with 19 goals as one of the top scorers in the Olympic League.
Co-defensive players of the game were junior Chelsea Rice and senior Erin Stockard.
“Chelsea was a standout on defense and Erin had a very solid game, also,” Scott Moseley said.
Sophomore midfielder Kathryn Moseley was named transition player of the game.
“Kathryn passed the ball very well,” Scott Moseley said.
Volleyball Timberline 3, Port Angeles 0
OLYMPIA — The Roughriders got stronger each game but it wasn’t enough in the loser-out subdistrict match Tuesday night.
It didn’t help that Port Angeles didn’t have its big middle blocker and hitter available for the match.
Emily Cook hurt a knee in an AAU club basketball game Sunday and couldn’t suit up for the volleyball team Tuesday.
Timberline won 25-8, 25-12, 25-21.
The Riders just couldn’t make up for Cook’s loss.
“We could have beaten them even without Emily but we weren’t playing with our normal confidence,” coach Christine Halberg said.
“The win was in our grasp. But in credit to Timberline, they served very well. They got us on our heels a little bit.”
Kiah Jones earned five kills with six digs and she served 8-for-8 for the Riders while Chloe Johnston was all over the floor with 10 digs.
Setter Emily Drake had 10 assists while Sam Manwell put down four kills and Autumn Ruddick added three kills.
The Riders ended the season with a winning 9-6 record.
“We had a great year,” Halberg said. “We improved as the season went on and we had momentum at the end of the season.”
Halberg is expecting the momentum and confidence level of the team to go into next season.
