SPORTS: Port Angeles, Sequim fall at district softball tournaments, just miss state

TACOMA — Port Angeles and Sequim both lost at the West Central District softball tournament and fell just short of a ticket to state Tuesday at Sprinker Recreation Center.

In the Wolves’ case, they were beaten by the weather as much as anything in the Class 2A tourney, losing an extra-inning game to Steilacoom and then never getting a change to play themselves back into state contention because of monsoon conditions.

The tournament was halted because of the pouring rain and Sequim finished two wins away from a state berth.

North Mason and Steilacoom earned the two state berths on the strength of winning their semifinal games.

The Roughriders, meanwhile, lost a 2-0 heartbreaker in Class 3A action to No. 1 seeded Franklin Pierce and then lost 9-4 to Camas in a consolation loser-out game later in the day before the heavy rain hit.

Both Franklin Pierce and Camas advanced to state.

Riders fall twice

Port Angeles had a strong season, ending up 12-11 on the year and beating Auburn Mountainside in the first round at districts Monday.

“We have had a good season,” coach Buddy Bear said.

“We had a late run, and I’m proud of these girls. We have a good group coming back next year.”

The Riders also had a good group of seniors who played their final high school games Tuesday.

The six seniors graduating soon include Amanda Wasnock, Sade Pimentel, Miranda Pitz, Ashley Polly, Jamie Curtis and Danielle Grall.

“The seniors really went out on a high note with the way they played,” Bear said.

In the first game, Franklin Pierce scored a run in the third and another one in the fourth and that was the only runs to cross home all day.

Wasnock (4-3) went the distance on the mound, scattering 11 hits while striking out one and walking just one.

“Amanda did a great job,” Bear said.

Pimentel went 2-for-3 at bat while Hannah Wahto, Stacy Webb and Curtis had one hit each.

Webb (8-8), a junior, pitched the first 2 2/3 innings of the second game while Wasnock went the rest of the way, giving up just one run.

“Wasnock was the person of the day,” Bear said.

Pimentel and Wahto both had two hits and scored a run each while Polly had two hits and an RBI.

Tori Holcomb also had two hits.

Steilacoom 3, Sequim 2

TACOMA — Inclement weather and an extra-inning loss to the Sentinels ended the Wolves’ 2A state tournament hopes Tuesday.

Sequim lost to Steilacoom in eight innings early on Tuesday, and then the rains came, cutting the 2A West Central District tournament short.

The Wolves had earned a spot into the double-elimination district bracket with a 10-0 win over Eatonville on Monday.

Yet with the WIAA forcing the West Central District to end its tournament by Tuesday, the Wolves didn’t get a chance to play their way out of the consolation bracket.

The loss to Steilacoom was supposed to drop Sequim into a loser-out game with Fife, which lost to North Mason on Monday.

A win there would have put Sequim in a loser-out, winner-to-state matchup with the loser of a North Mason-Steilacoom game that never happened due to the rain.

Both semifinal winners were instead given the district’s two berths to state.

Details of the game against Steilacoom were not reported by press time Tuesday night.
