DES MOINES — Port Angeles is sending five gymnasts to this weekend’s state championship meet at the Tacoma Dome.
Madylan Coventon, Cecily Schwagler, Alyssa Martinez, Alexis Hefton and Katie Gibson all qualified for state at last Saturday’s West Central District meet at Mount Rainier High School.
Schwagler, whose all-around score was 16th in the competition, qualified in all four events — vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise.
She placed first on the balance beam with a score of 8.575. She was the only Roughriders gymnast to qualify for the state balance beam competition.
Coventon qualified in the vault, uneven bars and floor exercise. Her highest finishes were fourth place in both the vault and uneven bars.
Hefton will compete at state in the uneven bars and floor exercise.
Martinez also qualified for two events, the vault and the floor exercise.
Katie Gibson qualified in the vault.
As a team, Port Angeles finished fifth at the district meet.

Sequim’s Ditlefsen
a state alternate
BATTLE GROUND — Sequim’s Kaylee Ditlefsen will be an alternate at this weekend’s Mat Classic XXV.
Ditlefsen went 1-3 at the regional tournament at Battle Ground High School last weekend.
Basketball
Forks’ Decker named 1st team
Forks senior standout Braden Decker was selected to the SWL-Evergreen Division first team.
Although they were near the top of the league standings all season long, the Spartans surprisingly didn’t place any other players on the first or second teams.
Mark Jacobson, a senior, and junior Leo Gonzales were both named honorable mention.
Two area teams
in action tonight
The Port Townsend girls and Sequim boys basketball teams have crucial loser-out postseason games this evening.
The Redskins (12-9) are at the Overlake Owls of Redmond in the opening game of the 1A tri-district tournament.
The winner of this game will face the Blaine Borderites (15-6) at Mountlake Terrace High School on Friday at 4:30 p.m.
If Port Townsend wins both of those games, they will face Eatonville (17-3) on Saturday at Lynnwood High School in Bothell for the tri-district’s fourth or fifth seed in the 1A state tournament.
Overlake (11-11) finished second in the Emerald City League.
Sequim faces the Steilacoom Sentinels in the West Central District tournament at Lakes High School in Tacoma.
The Wolves could have bypassed the loser-out round by beating Olympic on Monday, but conceded that game in favor of healing injuries and illness.
The winner of this game moves on to the double-elimination phase of the tournament and will face Franklin Pierce (14-8) on Thursday, also at Lakes High School.
If Sequim beats Steilacoom and Franklin Pierce, it will be guaranteed one of the district’s top four spots in the state tournament.
If the Wolves beat the Sentinels but then lose to the Cardinals, they will play a loser-out game for the district’s sixth seed at state.
Steilacoom (10-13) finished fifth in the 2A South Puget Sound League.
