SPORTS: Port Angeles second at its own Duke Streeter boys golf invitational

PORT ANGELES — Shelton shot a 211 to win its third consecutive Duke Streeter Memorial Invitational at Peninsula Golf Club on Friday.

The 18th annual tournament, hosted by Port Angeles, was played with a three-team, two-man scramble format.

“It’s true team golf,” Roughriders coach Mark Mitrovich said of the format.

Port Angeles was second with a combined score of 221 while Chimicum and North Mason tied for third with scores of 225.

Sequim, playing without some of its top players, finished fifth with a score of 234.

The Roughriders’ Jordan Negus and Joe Barnes were the top duo, scoring a medalist-best 65.

Shelton’s Zach Lund and Alec Martinson were second with 67.

Port Angeles also received a good performance from the Garrett Payton-Alex Atwell pairing, who shot 69.

Strong round

In the two-man scramble format, Anthony Pinza and Jesse Francis were Sequim’s top scorers with a solid combined round of 72.

Frank Catelli and Travis Priest teamed up to shoot 77 and the duo of Henry Markham and Alex McCracken finished at 85 strokes.

Boys at sub-districts

BREMERTON — The Port Angeles and Sequim boys golf teams fared well earlier in the week at the sub-district tournament at Gold Mountain Golf Club.

Garrett Payton of Port Angeles was the top medalist with a round of 78.

He automatically qualified for the state tournament along with teammates Joe Barnes and Jordan Negus, who shot 81 and 83, respectively.

Payton, Barnes and Negus — the top three for the Riders — have combined to go undefeated in all of Port Angeles’ meets this year.

Two at districts

Port Angeles hopes to get two more golfers to state.

Freshman Alex Atwell scored 88 and Bryan Schlinkman a 90 to earn berths in Tuesday’s district tournament at Gold Mountain.

The top players at district advance to the state tournament.

Ryan O’Mera, meanwhile, will represent the Sequim Wolves in the state tournament after a second-place showing at the sub-district championships at Gold Mountain, coming in right behind Payton.

O’Mera finished with an 80 for the round.

Frank Catelli and Casey Torres will be vying to join O’Mera at state by performing well at the 2A district tournament Tuesday.

Catelli shot an 85 and Torres an 87 at sub-districts to secure berths in the district tournament.

The six best sub-district scores automatically qualified for state and the top 15 scores advanced to the district tournament.

Two other Sequim golfers narrowly missed moving on.

Anthony Pinza and Travis Priest both shot 92, which was a single shot behind 15th place.
