SPORTS: Port Angeles runs over Port Townsend, 15-5

PORT TOWNSEND — Cody Sullivan gave up no runs from the mound and continued his hitting rampage to lead Port Angeles over Port Townsend in an Olympic League baseball game Monday.

It took just five innings for the Roughriders to beat the Redskins 15-5 and improve to 2-2 in league and 2-3 overall.

It stayed dry for the two teams but it was a typically breezy and cool spring day.

“It was really, really windy and cold,” Port Angeles coach Bob Withrow said.

The weather didn’t slow down Sullivan, who is hitting .650 with 12 hits in the team’s first five games.

“Cody is hitting well,” Withrow said.

Sullivan went 2-for-3 with three runs scored, a stolen base and a walk.

He also won his first game of the year, 1-0, by pitching the first two innings, giving up no runs while striking out three, walking just one and giving up a hit.

Daniel Pitz struggled for Port Angeles in the third inning as he gave up four earned runs on four hits while the wind played havoc with his patented curveball.

Sophomore Hayden McCartney pitched the final 2 1/3 innings, allowing no runs on one hit and one walk while fanning three batters.

“Hayden did a good job,” Withrow said.

McCartney wasn’t the only young pitcher to come through in the game.

Port Townsend freshman Kyle Kelly came in and gave up no runs in the final two innings.

“Kyle pitched well for us,” Port Townsend coach Tom Webster said.

Cameron Robinson started the game for the Redskins but struggled in the third inning as the Riders scored 11 runs.

“The wheels came off for us in the third,” Webster said. “They had 16 come up to bat.”

Easton Napiontek also had a good day at the plate for the Riders as he went 2-for-3 with five RBIs, two runs scored and a walk.

Trevor Drake also went 2-for-3 for Port Angeles with four RBIs.

For Port Townsend, Ryan Aumock went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and he scored a run while teammate Ryan Unbedacht went 2-for-2 with an RBI, walk and run.

The Redskins scored all their runs in the third inning.

That was the most Port Townsend has scored at one time all year, Webster said.

The Riders next host Bremerton while the Redskins (0-5, 0-6) travel to Klahowya in league games today.
