SPORTS: Port Angeles nips Renton to advance into 2A girls basketball district championship game

LAKEWOOD — Kiah Jones and Mariah Frazier combined for 29 points to spark the Port Angeles girls basketball team into the West Central District Class 2A championship game today.

The Roughriders blew out to a 33-16 halftime lead but had to hold off Renton in the second half to earn a 54-52 victory in the district semifinals Saturday night at Lakes High School.

Port Angeles will battle White River for all the marbles and the top seed to regionals at the ShoWare Center in Kent at noon today.

Against Renton in the semifinals, Frazier also had 13 rebounds, four steals and four assists.

“For the second night in a row, Mariah Frazier played a great defensive game,” Port Angeles coach Michael Poindexter said.

“Kathryn Moseley also played a particularly impressive defensive game against their point guard, P.J. Tuiasosopo.

“Kiah Jones had another all-around good game and Shayla Northern played the whole fourth quarter, doing a nice all around job handling the ball.”

Team effort

Overall, it was another great team effort by the Riders, Poindexter said.

Renton has a big and physical team that was difficult for the Riders to handle.

“We sometimes struggled against their physical play because of our lack of size,” Poindexter said.

“But confidence from winning close games all year helped us at the end of the game.”

Tuiasosopo and Jordan Armstrong sank 16 points each for Renton while Farris Taylor netted 12.
