ABBEVILLE, La. — Port Angeles jumped out to a 1-0 lead early in their second pool play game of the 2004 Babe Ruth World Series, but Jefferson Parish Recreation Department (JPRD) East fought back to take the 5-1 victory.
The game did not end until almost midnight CDT.
“The girls played hard, but we made some mental mistakes that cost us the game,” said Port Angeles manager Warren Stevens.
“Everybody is out there giving 130 percent, and the errors come because they are busting their butts to make a play.
“We need to tone it down a little bit,” Stevens said. “We have been too aggressive and we’ve paid for it.”
Port Angeles scored in the top of the second when leadoff batter Kelly Henderson advanced to first on an error by JPRD first baseman Rachel McConnell.
Another JPRD error, this time by the shortstop, allowed catcher Laura Campbell to reach first and advanced Henderson to third.
Two batters later, Jennifer Monroe’s chopper to third base scored Henderson.
Port Angeles held JPRD East scoreless through three innings with solid pitching from Megan Ramsey and quality defensive play behind her.
Only two JPRD batters reached base in the first three innings.
The tide turned against Port Angeles in the bottom of the fourth.
