SPORTS: Port Angeles, Forks wrestling teams finish high at Fife tournament

FIFE — Brian Cristion captured an individual championship to spark Port Angeles to runner-up team honors at the 16-team Larry Brown Invitational wrestling tournament at Fife High School.

Forks, the only 1A school in the tourney, took sixth place.

Twelve of 13 Roughriders won at least one match while nine placed in the top five of their respective weight brackets.

Sunnyside claimed the team championship with 243.5 points while the Riders were second with 166, followed by host Fife at 162.5.

Fellow North Olympic Peninsula team Forks claimed sixth place with a score of 114.5.

Olympic League team North Mason grabbed fifth with a score of 120.5.

Cristion finishes at top

Cristion, a senior, captured the individual title for the Riders at 170 pounds.

Port Angeles coach Erik Gonzalez named Cristion his wrestler of the week for his performance at Fife.

“Brian responded to a tough one-point loss at the Forks Tournament a week ago by pinning all four of his opponents en route to winning the gold medal at the Larry Brown Invitational,” Gonzalez said.

“He is also an honor student carrying a challenging course load and a 3.7 GPA.”

Cristion was the lone champion for Port Angeles while one Rider took second and five claimed third place.

Ozzy Swagerty took second at 126 pounds while third-place honors went to Tyler Gale at 106, Brady Anderson at 113, Josh Basden at 120, Matt Robbins at 182 and Michael Myers at heavyweight, 285 pounds.

Two Riders captured fifth place, including Gavin Crain at 132 and Roberto Coronel at 220.

The Spartans, meanwhile, also had an individual winner as Sebastion Morales captured the title at 106 pounds to remain undefeated on the year.

Taking third place for Forks were Sebastion Parragan at 126, Sanchez Manito at 132, Ricky Paragan at 138, James Salazar at 160 and Miguel Morales at 285.

Earning fifth place and placing for the Spartans were Hadier Contreras at 132 and Gavin Casteneda at 195.

In addition, Forks had four girls capture first place in a girls wrestling tournament at Foss High School in Tacoma.

The champions were Cassy Schroeder, Maryanna Gomez, Tristen Williams and Brooke Peterson.

In upcoming action, Port Angeles next will wrestle at the Graham Morin Memorial Tournament at Squalicum High School in Bellingham on Saturday. Action starts at 10 a.m., while Forks is in a SWL-Evergreen Division double-dual at Tenino with Rainier.
