PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles girls tennis team did not drop a game in singles matches to overwhelm Chimacum/Port Townsend 7-0 in Olympic League action Friday.
The Roughriders relied on their depth and strength in singles to beat their Jefferson County rival.
Port Angeles also dropped just 10 games in doubles competition to complete a strong day on the courts.
The best competition came at No. 1 doubles where Danielle Rutherford and Shayla Bohman of Port Angeles beat a spirited twosome of twins Rebecca and Rachel Ramsey 6-2, 6-4.
Port Angeles coach Brian Gundersen named No. 2 doubles players Jordi Fickas and Chelsea Drake as the players of the match.
The pair defeated Sarah Allen and Rachel Maki 6-1, 6-0.
“Jordi and Chelsea had a great game plan and they executed it very well,” Gundersen said.
Also in doubles, at No. 3 Lissy Moriarty and Kelsey Coffman beat Lauren Thacker and Lexie Cray 6-2, 6-1 while at No. 4 Krissy Marvelle and Bradi McFarlen defeated Mae Babik and Kim Wheeler 6-0, 6-0.
Port Angeles singles players were perfect as Caylie Cook beat Mary Jane Richardson at No. 1, Kyrie Reyes defeated Justine Sutherland at No. 2, and Callie Peet beat Hunter Clanton at
No. 3.
Earlier in the week, the Riders ran into a buzzsaw, losing 7-0 to league-leading Kingston 7-0.
“We had some chances early in the match, but Kingston is very experienced,” Gundersen said.
The coach selected No. 4 doubles team McFarlen and Marvelle as players of the match as they lost a very close 7-6, 7-6 match to Kingston’s Liz Lawrence and Kate Barrett.
“Bradi and Krissy were right there, shot for shot, and lost a heartbreaker,” Gundersen said.
The Riders next play at archrival Sequim on Monday.
Sequim 5, Bremerton 2
BREMERTON — The Wolves swept doubles play to win the Olympic League match Friday.
Sequim improved to 5-1 in league and 7-2 overall.
The Wolves lost just six games in doubles as Stacy Hanson and Katrina Chan led the way at No. 1 by blanking Hannah Bradley and Alyssa Membrere 6-0, 6-0.
Hillary Smith and Anna Prorok won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles while teammates Jessica DeFilippo and Elizabeth Shore won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3, and Heidi Stallman and Calli Norman won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4.
Sequim’s lone singles winner was Hannah Gauthun, who beat Trisha Pallarco 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3.

Chimacum 12, Orting 0
CHIMACUM — In Chimacum’s Nisqually League victory over Orting on Thursday, Landon Cray lit up the Cardinals with his bat and shut them down with his arm.
Cray improved his record to 4-0 by striking out five Orting batters in three innings of work.
At the plate, he went 2-for-3 and scored three runs.
Mike Nordberg continued his hot streak by going 2-for-3 with an RBI while Lucas Dukek rapped a triple with an RBI and Derek Ajax hit a double and had an RBI.
Boys Soccer
Klahowya 1, Sequim 0
SEQUIM — The Wolves once again had a tough time putting the ball in the goal, falling in Olympic League action Thursday.
Coach Dave Brasher points out that Klahowya is improved this year, but laments his team’s inability to score.
“We are snake-bit,” Brasher said.
One shot hit the bar and another hit the Klahowya goalkeeper’s head.
After a scoreless first half, Klahowya’s Kasey Trask scored on a counter-attack in the 68th minute.
With only four games left, Sequim’s playoff hopes are dwindling.
But Brasher is optimistic the Wolves can sneak into the playoffs by winning three of those games.
