SPORTS: Port Angeles diver wins state title second year in a row

FEDERAL WAY — Port Angeles senior diver Austin Fahrenholtz just keeps getting better and better.

Fahrenholtz captured his second straight state title while breaking his state meet record in the process at the state boys swimming and diving championships at King County Aquatic Center on Friday and Saturday.

Fahrenholtz, who won state last year with a record score of 376.10, improved to 427.20 for another title Saturday and another record.

In addition, Tyler Burke claimed fourth place in the 100-yard backstroke at 57.11, improving on last year’s fifth-place finish.

Only the top four placers receive state medals.

Matt Watkins, meanwhile, took ninth in the 100 breast in a lifetime best time of 1:05.03.

The 400 free relay claimed eighth place with John Macias, Avery Koehler, Watkins and Burke in 3:31.40 while the 200 medley relay team took ninth in 1:47.42 with Burke, Watkins, Koehler and Macias.

Also placing were divers Sam Beasley, taking ninth; Greg Cornelson in 13th and Phillip Scott in 16th.

The Roughriders captured 13th overall in team score while coach Rich Butler was selected as the Class 2A state boys swimming and diving coach of the year.

“This was a fun group to get it with,” Butler said.
