PORT ANGELES — Olympic nudged out Port Angeles for the 2A Olympic League subregional wrestling championship but the Roughriders still ended up with the most finalists with six, the most champions with four and tied for the most top-five finalists with 11.
The top four wrestlers in each weight class advance to the regional tournament at Bremerton High School this Saturday. Action starts at 10 a.m.
The fifth wrestler is an alternate in each class while the top six placed at subregionals, which were held at Port Angeles High School on Friday and Saturday.
The Trojans won the tournament with a score of 275 with the Riders second at 243.5 and Bremerton third at 216.
The Knights were followed by Klahowya 212, Kingston 198.5, North Kitsap 176.5, North Mason 148.5 and Sequim 83.5.
The Wolves have two wrestlers advancing to regionals, including 138-pound runner-up Luke Mooney.
Winning individual championships for the Riders were freshman Tyler Gale at 106 pounds, sophomore Brady Anderson at 113, junior Ozzy Swagerty at 126 and sophomore Matt Robbins at 182.
Anderson improved to 25-3 on the year while Robbins is 30-6, Gale 27-6 and Swagerty 27-5.
Runner-up honors went to Port Angeles’ 220 Roberto Coronel, a senior, at 220 and senior Michael Myers at 285.
Myers’ record improves to 25-8 while Coronel’s improves to 24-8.
Loses by 3 points
Coronel had two pins before losing 8-5 to Bremerton’s Rusty Hoffman in the championship match while Myers won by a pin and an 18-5 major decision before losing 3-1 in the title match to North Kitsap’s Brendan Best.
Capturing third place and going out at subregionals with a win were senior Brian Cristion at 170, senior Eric Wahl at 195 and sophomore Kyle LaFritz at 220.
Cristion, 32-3 on the year, wrestled in a tough bracket, winning three matches by fall but losing a 9-1 major decision to eventual winner Aaron Dickson of Kingston in the semifinals.
Dickson is 35-2 on the year.
LaFritz continues to have a strong season, improving to 22-7 after earning two pins and winning 11-5 in the third-place final.
Also earning a trip to regionals with a fourth-place finish was senior Josh Basden at 120.
Basden lost 2-1 to North Kitsap’s Andrew Posten in the third-place final.
Earning alternate status and a trip to regionals if one of the top four wrestlers can’t make it is sophomore Sam Burton at 138.
Also placing for Port Angeles at subregionals in sixth place were sophomore Ricky Crawford at 145 and junior Zak Alderson at 195.
Mooney earns second
Mooney, a senior, led Sequim at regionals by capturing runner-up honors at 138 pounds, losing by pin in the championship match to North Kitsap senior Jake Velarde, who pinned all three of his opponents and was named the outstanding wrestler of the tournament.
Velarde is 34-1 on the season while Mooney is 17-7.
Also earning a trip to subregionals is junior Royhon Agostine of Sequim, who claimed fourth place at 126.
Sophomore Brandon Field of Sequim is an alternate at 132 by taking fifth place.
Field earned fifth by beating fellow teammate Derek Allen 11-5 in the fifth-place match.
In votes at the meet for postseason honors, Sequim won the Olympic League Sportsmanship Team award, and Bremerton’s Jeff Barton was named the coach of the year.

Neah Bay 79, Clallam Bay 67
CLALLAM BAY — The Red Devils used a balanced attack with five players scoring in double figures to hold off the rival Bruins in the final regular-season North Olympic League game for both teams this season.
Neah Bay ends the season perfect in league at 6-0 and improves to 14-1 overall heading into tri-district action.
The Bruins also head to the tri-district tournament, playing the District 2 No. 2 team on Feb. 9 in a loser-out game.
The Red Devils will host the winner of the Clallam Bay game on Feb. 12.
The Bruins proved on Friday night that they can stay fairly close to their rivals with three players scoring in double figures.
Otherwise, the Red Devils have dominated the Bruins as well as the rest of the North Olympic League.
In two other games this season, Neah Bay blasted Clallam Bay 77-35 and 80-54.
Josiah Greene led the Red Devils with a double-double as he netted 16 points, tying for team-best, and he also pulled down 10 rebounds.
Greene also had a team-high five assists.
Leyton Doherty also swished in 16 points and he had seven boards and a game-high six steals.
Zeke Greene was right behind with 15 points, nine rebounds and three steals while Tyler McCaulley scored 12 and Abraham Venske added 11.
Neah Bay stormed out to a 25-14 lead at the end of the first quarter, and led 43-27 at halftime.
The Red Devils increased the lead by one, 58-41, heading into the final period of play.
Kevin Hess led a trio of players in double figures for the Bruins with 17 points.
Kelly Gregory sank 14 on 6 of 8 shooting from the field while Justin Welever added 12 for Clallam Bay.

CLALLAM BAY — The Red Devils used a stifling defense to hold the Bruins to a single digit for the game as the two teams concluded regular-season North Olympic League competition Friday night.
Neah Bay, 6-0 in league and 13-1 overall, now heads into 1B tri-district play Feb. 12 against either fellow league rival Crescent or the No. 2 teams from District 2.
The Red Devils led 30-3 after one and coasted to the win.
Cierra Moss sparked Neah Bay with 19 points on 7 of 12 shooting from the field and a double-double with 12 rebounds.
Moss also had an amazing nine steals and three assists.
Faye Chartraw also scored in double figures as she sank 16 points on 7 of 13 shooting from the floor.
Holly Greene, meanwhile, earned five steals while Hailey Greene and Blaire Hill had four steals each.
The Red Devils had 29 steals for the game.

QUILCENE — Missed shots doomed the Rangers in the Sea-Tac League game Friday night.
“We missed several shot opportunities that would have put us in the game against the Lions,” Quilcene coach Briana Weller said.
“Our shooting percentage from the field has to improve. We are working on strengthening that area of our game.
“We have to shoot more consistently and raise the bar with better field-goal percentages.”
Sammy Rae had another monster game for Quilcene with a double-double of 16 points and 19 rebounds.
Andrea Lara, meanwhile, scored eight points and had five steals for the Rangers while Bailey Kieffer added eight points.
Katie Bailey added six points, Megan Weller scored five points and Allison Jones added four points for Quilcene.
“A new chapter has been written for the Lady Ranger basketball program, and these girls have been challenged to step up and push themselves,” Weller said.
“Dedication is a big part of that with practices this season running six days a week, and also during the summer.”
The Rangers’ final game of the season is on Tuesday against Sea-Tac League rival Muckleshoot.
