PORT ORCHARD — Connor Reid and Sam Beasley of Port Angeles won the No. 1 doubles title at the eight-school Fall Invitational boys tennis tournament at South Kitsap High School on Saturday.
The invitational is the largest in the North Olympic Peninsula-Kitsap Peninsula area with six different flights, including 1 and 2 singles and 1 through 4 doubles.
The Roughriders fared extremely well in the double action, highlighted by a come-from-behind win by Reid and Beasley in the championship match, Port Angeles coach Brian Gundersen said.
“It was an amazing comeback,” Gundersen said. “Connor and Sam dug down deep and found an extra gear just when they needed it.”
Reid and Beasley lost the first set in the championship round 6-2 and were down 5-2 in the second set before the improbable comeback win.
The Rider duo won five games in a row to win the second set 7-5 and held on for the win in a third set tie-breaker.
The No. 2 doubles team of Michael and Marcus Konopaski, and the No. 3 doubles squad of Chase Walsh and Kevin Herzog both captured third place for the Riders while the No. 4 doubles team of Kapono Rogers and Derek Schumacher claimed fourth place.
Port Angeles No. 2 singles player Brandon Notar took seventh while No. 1 singles player Jordan Negus claimed eighth.
Schools attending the event in addition to Port Angeles were North Kitsap, Kingston, Central Kitsap, host South Kitsap, Sumner, Enumclaw and Gig Harbor.

Port Angeles 6, Klahowya 1
SILVERDALE — The Roughriders swept the singles matches and dropped only one doubles match in Olympic League action Friday.
“We had a couple of tough matches that went three sets, and we saved our best tennis for the end,” coach Brian Gundersen said.
Top doubles players Connor Reid and Sam Beasely were named players of the match after beating Drew Fagan and Cory Stewart 6-3, 6-4.
“We’ve been working on consistency and I thought Connor and Sam really focused on that [Friday],” Gundersen said.
The Riders (5-2) next host Olympic on Monday.

PA at Bellevue Invitational
BELLEVUE — The Roughriders did well at the prestigious Bellevue meet on Saturday.
There were 46 schools that competed on the slow course that wound along the beach at Lake Sammamish for about 300 meters through loose sand.
“That took the tuck out of most runners,” Port Angeles coach Pat Durr said.
Senior Hannah Wahto ran the 5-kilometer course in 21:58 for 25th place in her race, improving more than 30 seconds from last year’s time.
Senior Katherine Dacko finished in 24:45, greatly improving over last year’s time of 26:32.
“I’m training much harder this season, so it’s paying off,” Dacko said. “I ran much better this year.”
On the boys side, senior Loren Henry finished in 23:49 while senior Mike Wood finished in 22:59.
Wood took one minute off of his time from last year.
The Riders next run at Lincoln Park on Wednesday in a three-way Olympic League meet against Olympic and Klahowya.
