PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles boys soccer team opened Olympic League play on the right foot Tuesday.
The Roughriders (1-0, 2-7) pounded North Mason 6-1 behind a dominating 26-10 advantage in shots on goal.
Port Angeles had lost 2-1 in a nonleague game to North Mason earlier in the year.
“We turned it around in a game that mattered,” coach Chris Saari said.
“This was our best overall performance of the season.”
Forrest Epstein and Kyle Bingham scored two goals each to spark the Riders, who led 4-0 at halftime.
Epstein scored within the first minute and again in the ninth minute, both on Anthony Brandon assists, to give Port Angeles a quick 2-0 lead.
Bingham picked it up in the 13th minute, scoring on an assist by Luis Neumeier.
Brandon finished off the first-half scoring with a goal in the 19th minute on an Epstein assist.
The Riders went ahead 6-0 in the second half on goals by Neumeier and Bingham.
Abinet Hayden assisted in Neumeier’s goal while Bingham had an unassisted goal.
The Bulldogs scored in the 73rd minute on a penalty kick to avoid a shutout.
Backup goalkeeper Forrest Emmett had nine saves for the Riders.
Epstein and Bingham were named co-offensive players of the game while Max Bukovnik and Owen Kays-Erdman were named co-defensive players of the match.
Brandon and Neumeier were named co-transition players of the match.
Port Angeles next plays at Klahowya on Thursday in another league match.
Charles Wright 7, Chimacum 0
CHIMACUM — Charles Wright exploded for five goals in the second half to run away with the Nisqually League match.
Chimacum (0-4, 5-5) had several opportunities in the first half but couldn’t find the back of the net.
Goalkeeper Austin Maples had five saves for the Cowboys while Perry Pearsall and Keenan Young created opportunities in the middle for the team.
Chimacum next plays at Life Christian on Thursday.
Girls Tennis Port Angeles 7, North Mason 0
PORT ANGELES — A little afternoon drizzle did little to bother the Roughriders in an impressive sweep of the Bulldogs on Tuesday.
Port Angeles didn’t drop a single set as it moved to 4-0 on the season.
“The whole team, JV included, played some really smart tennis today,” Port Angeles coach Brian Gunderson said.
“You have to adapt your game when the courts get wet and I thought they all did a great job adjusting to the conditions.”
The Riders’ No. 1 singles player (Alexis Corn) and No. 1 doubles team (Sam Manwell and Grace Van Rossen) were absolutely dominant in their matches, with duel 6-2, 6-0 wins.
Chelsea Drake was named Port Angeles’ player of the match after taking her No. 2 singles matchup 6-3, 6-1.
Port Angeles travels to Klahowya on Thursday.

Softball Chimacum 17, 13 Vashon Island 0, 0
VASHON — Brittany Nelson nearly won a game by herself Monday.
The senior hurler tossed five perfect innings and smashed a home run in Chimacum’s 17-0 dismantling of 1A Nisqually League rival Vashon Island.
It was the first of two five-inning mercy-rule wins in a doubleheader sweep of the Pirates.
Nelson fell just one weak ground ball short of keeping Vashon from even putting a ball in play, striking out 14 of 15 faced in the win.
Her two-run homer in the second inning, one of 13 Chimacum hits, was just icing on the cake.
“She was pretty relaxed and just worked on staying down in the zone,” Chimacum coach Bobby Cossell said.
Natasha Kiesel, Arlie Petrick, Cece Dietz and Krista Hathaway each had multi-hit games for the Cowboys, who began the game up with a 12-run first inning and never let up.
The Cowboys bashed 11 hits in their 13-0 victory in the second game of the doubleheader.
Cydney Nelson, Cailey Snyder and Kaylie Castillo all had two hits in the win.
Nelson, the younger sister of Brittany, earned the win on the mound with three shutout innings.
Chimacum (4-0 in league, 5-0 overall) next hosts Orting on Friday at 4 p.m.
