SPORTS: Port Angeles boys open soccer season with 6-1 loss

GIG HARBOR — A young Port Angeles boys soccer team opened its season with a 6-1 loss to the Class 4A Gig Harbor Tides on Saturday.

The Tides led 3-0 at halftime, then went on to score another three in the final 40 minutes.

“They are just a good quality 4A team,” Riders coach Chris Saari said

Anthony Brandon scored Port Angeles’ lone goal unassisted after he stole the ball in Tides territory and quickly launched a shot that hit the goal frame and bounced in.

“Brandon was definitely the player of the game today on offense,” Saari said.

Max Bukovnik was the Riders defensive player of the game, according to Saari.

The Riders were outshot 30-2 over the course of the game.

“This was just a chance for us to get going.”

Port Angeles hosts Forks on Tuesday in another nonleague match.

Vashon’s four-run sixth inning was due to a grand slam.

Freshman Kyle Kelly had two hits and played well defensively in his varsity debut for the Redskins.

Eric Thomas had a double while Cameron Robinson had the Redskins’ lone RBI on an infield hit in the fifth inning.
