PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles boys basketball team ripped North Mason and took over sole possession of second place in the Olympic League on Thursday night.
In a makeup game after a snow day, the Roughriders dismantled the Bulldogs 62-31 to improve to 11-4 in league and 13-6 overall.
The Riders are a half-game ahead of their archrival, Sequim, with a crucial showdown between the two Tuesday night at Port Angeles starting at 7 p.m.
The Wolves could climb back into a tie with the Riders with a win tonight against Kingston.
Port Angeles secured at least a third-place finish in league with Thursday’s victory.
The win also helped out Port Townsend, which is now a half-game ahead of the Bulldogs for fifth place in league and a playoff berth.
The Redskins (5-10 in league) must finish in fifth place or better to advance.
North Mason now is 4-10 in league, 5-13 overall.
The Riders still won handily Thursday despite missing two starters for the second straight game.
Cameron Braithwaite and Justin Antioquia missed the game.
“Cameron and Justin could have played but we wanted to play it safe,” Port Angeles coach Wes Armstrong said.
“They will play against Sequim on Tuesday.
“It was a great team effort, especially on defense. We played PA hard-nosed defense. We caused turnovers and got our breakaway going a little bit.”
Ian Ward scored 19 points for the Riders while Colin Wheeler added 10.
Tanner Phair came off the bench to score six points, grab a game-high seven rebounds, earn six steals and have four assists.
“Tanner played great off the bench and Ian did a great job with his interior play,” Armstrong said.

PORT ANGELES — The Red Devils pulled off an impressive 15-point win against the Port Angeles Rider JV team Thursday night in Port Angeles.
Leading the way for the Red Devils was Drexler Doherty, who had a game high 21 points to go with his four steals.
Zeke Greene dominated the boards with seven rebounds and 12 points.
Beating the Riders by only two points at halftime, Neah Bay turned up the heat to outscore Port Angeles 32-19 in the second half.
Playing well for the Riders, Cole Uvila scored 14 points and Jordan Norberg chipped in 10.
The Red Devils will next travel to Clallam Bay on Friday with game time starting at 8 p.m.

BELFAIR — The Riders moved within a win of their second straight unbeaten Olympic League campaign with a dominating performance against the Bulldogs on Thursday.
Jessica Madison scored 15 of her game-high 27 points in the first quarter, as the Riders raced out to a 24-10 lead and never looked back.
“For some reason these kids can score in bunches,” Rider coach Mike Knowles said.
Krista Johnson dropped in 11 points for the third-ranked Riders, who hit 11 3-pointers on the night.
That included five in the first quarter when Port Angeles (15-0, 16-3) went on a 15-0 run.
“We had the league championship wrapped up last game, but the kids now are preparing for the postseason,” Knowles said. “That’s what their focus is.”
Port Angeles closes out its regular season slate with a home game against rival Sequim on Senior Night.

JOYCE – The Bruins beat the Loggers on their home floor Wednesday night after trailing for three quarters.
The Bruins came from behind to outscore the Loggers by 16 points in the fourth quarter to capture the win.
Melissa Willis scored 11 points and Jazzmin Randall had 10 for Clallam Bay.
Crescent’s Sara Moore had 14 points and seven rebounds to lead the Loggers.
Kelsie Ritchie had a strong game for Crescent, bringing down 10 rebounds to go with her five points.
Crescent finishes its season (0-6, 3-14) while Clallam Bay hosts Neah Bay today starting at 6:30 p.m.
