PORT TOWNSEND — Brady Konopaski drove in Wes Giddings and Chase Jangula in the top of the eight inning to give the Port Angeles baseball team a 7-5 win over Port Townsend.
The win keeps the Roughriders in the thick of the race for the Olympic League tournament, which begins next week.
Port Angeles (7-5) currently sits in fourth place, a half-game behind third-place Olympic (8-5, 8-7). Five teams advance to the league tournament.
“We did not play very well,” Riders coach Chad Wagner said.
“I will take some blame, putting some people in some new spots as we have four games in five days.”
In the win, Port Angeles appears to have found another arm to add to their pitching staff, or at least someone they can turn to in a bind.
“Hayden Gunderson really impressed me and was the main reason we won that game,” Wagner said.
“He hasn’t pitched an inning this year, but being called upon in an important situation, [he] showed veteran confidence.”
Gunderson, a junior, relieved Konopaski in the fourth inning, and finished out the game, striking out four, allowing four hits and one run (unearned) and walking just one batter.
Chase Jangula contributed three hits, drove in two runs and scored a pair of runs.
For Port Townsend, Dillon Ralls had two hits and an RBI, Emmett Davis doubled and drove in a run, and Cody Russell added two hits.
Both the Riders and the Redskins (1-12, 1-13) begin a stretch of three games in three days today.
Port Angeles hosts rival Sequim (3-8, 5-8), and then plays at home Thursday against North Mason (6-7, 9-7) on Thursday. The Bulldogs are right behind the Riders in the league standings.
Port Townsend can help Port Angeles moved up in the standings with a win at Olympic today.

SEQUIM — The Wolves played the Olympic League-leading Knights (11-1, 12-4) tough, but came up just short.
Brett Wright was a perfect 3 for 3 at the plate with a run and two steals for Sequim, while Jon Donahue contributed a double,
triple and RBI, and Nick Johnston had a double
and a run.
As a team, the Wolves out-hit Bremerton 14 to seven, but were able to generate only five runs.
Sequim (3-8, 5-8) looks to keep its playoff hopes alive against rival Port Angeles (7-5) today at Civic Field.

CHIMACUM — The Eagles plated two runs in the top of the seventh inning to complete their comeback and defeat the Cowboys.
Chimacum (2-10) opened the game with five runs in the first inning to jump out to a 5-1 lead.
The Eagles scored four in the fourth inning to tie the score, but the Cowboys took the lead back with a run in the sixth.
Alex Morris was perfect at the plate, going 3 for 3, and Colton Shaw added a pair of hits.
Chimacum hosts Seattle Christian today. The Cowboys earned the first of their two victories this year over the Eagles last month.

PORT TOWNSEND — Maddy Hinrichs and Raelyn Lucas had four hits apiece to help the Roughriders thrash the Redskins and keep within a game of Olympic League-leading Sequim.
Port Angeles (9-1, 10-1) hosts the Wolves (9-0, 10-0) today in what should be the biggest league game of the season.
Riders pitchers Dove Lucas and Cara Cristion combined to hold Port Townsend to two hits. Each pitcher recorded three strikeouts.
Mia Henderson was 1-2 and scored Port Townsend’s lone run.
The Redskins (1-10, 1-12) play at fourth-place Olympic (8-3, 8-6) today.

SEQUIM — The Wolves continued the league dominance by shutting out another Olympic League opponent.
The league-leaders play at second-place Port Angeles (9-1, 10-1) at Dry Creek Elementary today.
In nine league games, all wins, Sequim (9-0, 10-0) has seven shutouts, and has only allowed eight runs (five to the Roughriders, three to third-place Kingston).
Against Bremerton (2-7, 2-8), Makayla Bentz, who pitches a bulk of the innings for the Wolves, was aided by Melissa Lewis.
Sequim jumped out to a 10-0 run, so Bentz only pitched two innings, and Lewis was on the mound for three.
Hannah Grubb and Bailey Rhodefer both homered for the Wolves, and Alexas Besand drove in three runs and scored two more.

CHIMACUM — The Wolves maintained their perfect record by winning all seven matches against Chimacum/Port Townsend.
Each match was won in two sets.
Sequim’s Anna Prorok won the No. 1 singles match 6-1, 6-3.
Hillary Smith defeated Irina Lyon 6-0, 6-0, in the No. 2 match, and Tenisha Powless beat Olivia Garte 6-3, 7-5, in the No. 3 match.
Doubles winners were Karen Chan and Melanie Guan, Heidi Stallman and Hannah Gauthun, Anna Mittman and Kortney Oen and Andrea Tjemsland and Sydney McCrorie.
The Wolves (5-0, 8-0) have a nonleague home match against rival Port Angeles today.

PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders split with the Bulldogs, with Port Angeles falling in the league match and winning the nonleague match.
In league match, which was a completion of a match that was stopped last week due to rain, North Mason prevailed 4-3 by winning twice in singles matches and doubles.
Winners for Port Angeles were Bradi McFarlen in the No. 3 singles match and doubles teams McKenna Thompson and Audra Perrizo, and Lydia Cornelson and Khaya Elliott.
Roughriders coach Stephanie Gochnour tabbed McFarlen and Perrizo as the player of the match.
Port Angeles took the nonleague match, 5-2.
Kyrie Reyes was the player of the match for her win in the No. 1 singles match.
“She played a great singles match and was in complete control with her skills at the net,” Gochnour said.
“As one of our captains this year, she confidently took on North Mason’s No. 1 Bree Abplanalp.”
Krissy Marvelle also picked up a singles win for the Riders, beating Sarah Newton 6-1, 6-3.
Port Angeles doubles winners were McKenna Thompsonand Audra Perrizo, Lydia Cornelsonand Khaya Elliott and Emily Basden and Ashlyn Johnson.
The Riders (2-4, 3-5) plays at Sequim today, and then concludes the regular season at North Kitsap on Thursday.
