SPORTS: Port Angeles baseball team beats Sequim 7-6 in eight innings; other prep reports

PORT ANGELES — Keenan Walker’s squeeze bunt in the bottom of the eighth inning sparked Port Angeles to an Olympic League baseball win over archrival Sequim on Monday.

After leading 6-1 at the end of five innings, the Roughriders (1-1 overall and league) held off a late rally by the Wolves to win 7-6 in extra innings at Volunteer Field.

“Sequim really battled back,” Port Angeles coach Bob Withrow said.

Port Angeles had no errors while Sequim had only one but said the Roughriders still needed to work on their mental mistakes.

“We’re still making a lot of mental mistakes but we will get better,” Withrow said.

Cody Sullivan started for the Riders, going 6 2/3 innings, giving up 12 hits, all six runs while striking our three and walking four.

Justin Williams (1-0) threw the final 1 1/3 innings, picking up the win while giving up just two hits, no runs or walks and fanning two.

Sullivan went a perfect 4-for-4 at bat, scoring two runs while hitting three doubles and driving in two runs.

Port Angeles’ AJ Konopaski, who scored the winning run on Walker’s squeeze bunt, went 2-for-4 with a double, scoring two runs and getting an RBI.

Williams was 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI, a run and a stolen base.

Port Angeles next plays at Klahowya in Silverdale on Wednesday, then hosts Class 1A power Chimacum on Thursday and entertains Newport of Bellevue on Saturday.

Sequim next hosts Bremerton on Wednesday.

Sequim nipped Port Angeles 10-9 in junior varsity baseball Monday.

CHIMACUM — Landon Cray and Dillon Dukek combined for a five-inning no-hitter in a Nisqually League game Monday.

The Cowboys (3-2 overall, 2-1 in league) put on a clinic for a youthful Life Christian team that gave up 12 runs on only five hits.

“They were a young team that struggled to get the ball over the plate,” Chimacum coach Loren Bishop said.

Pitching ace Cray (1-0) went the first three innings, striking out seven, while Dukek threw the last two innings, fanning two.

Cray and Austin McConnell carried the big bats, earning three of the team’s five hits.

Cray went 1-for-2 with a grand slam homer while McConnell was 2-for-3 with a home run and a triple.

The Class 1A powerhouse Cowboys next will play at 3A Port Angeles on Thursday.

They get two days off between games.

“The time off is well-deserved,” Bishop said. “We had four games last week, and now we get a few days to regroup before we play Port Angeles.”
