SPORTS: Port Angeles Babe Ruth team 2-0 in state tournament

PORT ANGELES — The 14-year-old North Olympic Junior Babe Ruth team is being a bad host.

The Port Angeles All-Stars won their first two games in the state tournament, being played at Volunteer Field, and are aiming for a berth in Sunday’s championship bracket.

The tourney, sponsored by North Olympic Junior Babe Ruth and Port Angeles Parks and Recreation, started Tuesday and will feature pool play through Saturday.

The top two teams in the American Division and National Division square off in the championship bracket Sunday.

The tournament winner advances to the regional championships. The title game is set for 4 p.m. at Volunteer on Sunday.

Port Angeles, 2-0 after beating Skagit Elite 9-3 on Tuesday and Moses Lake 9-5 on Wednesday, is in the American Division along with Sequim, Moses Lake, Skagit Elite and Lynden.

Fellow North Olympic Peninsula team Sequim is 0-2, losing 10-0 to Lynden on Tuesday and 12-4 to Skagit Elite on Wednesday.

In pool play today, Sequim has a bye and Olympic plays Lynden at 5:30 p.m.

Port Angeles hosts Sequim on Friday at 5:30 p.m. and has a bye Saturday.

Sequim, meanwhile, wraps up pool play against Moses Lake on Saturday at noon.

Burlington of the National Division is the only other 2-0 team in the tourney right now.

Lynden, at 1-0, is the only other undefeated team.

Tonight’s game between Port Angeles and Lynden could be crucial for the American Division title.

In Tuesday’s opener, Olympic started the tournament with a bang, coming from behind to beat a powerful Skagit Elite squad 9-3.

Skagit took a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning, then added a home run by Dakota Hartley to go up 3-0.

Unfortunately for Skagit, that would be all for its offense.

Olympic put up two runs in the top of the fourth and exploded for five more in the fifth for a solid 7-3 lead.

Marcus Konopaski led Olympic at the plate by going 2-for-3 while both Joey Barnes and Wesley King batted 2-for-4.

King, who also had two doubles, earned the win on the mound for an outstanding all-around game.

Brian DeFrang and Chace Souza had a double each.
