OLYMPIA — It was a good day to be a Peninsula Pirate, but not such a good day to be a South Puget Sound Clipper.
The Peninsula College men’s soccer team scored early and often against the Clippers, who were 2-0 going into the conference opener for both teams, as the 10th-ranked Pirates cruised to a 10-0 victory.
Victor Sanchez scored eight minutes into the match, Ash Apollon followed with a goal four minutes later.
A goal from Alex Martinez and another by Apollon gave the Pirates a 4-0 lead at the 19-minute mark.
Christian Martinez then scored back-to-back goals, Alex Martinez tallied his second goal, and Kassio Monteiro got in on the act to give Peninsula an 8-0 lead at the half.
Steven Rodriguez and Erick Urzua found the net in the second half.
Christian Martinez and Urzua each contributed two assists, while Alex Martinez, Sanchez, Christopher Galea, Corbyn May, Monteiro and Rodriguez also had assists.
Sophomore goalkeeper Angel Guerra recorded his first shutout of the season.
“It was nice to get the shutout, especially for Angel,” Peninsula coach Andrew Chapman said after Wednesday’s game.
The Pirates, 1-0-0 in conference and 6-0-1 overall, host Southwestern Oregon Community College Saturday at 2 p.m. in an NWAACC doubleheader between the schools.
The women’s team plays the Lakers at noon.

In between Saturday’s two games, the men’s and women’s teams will be presented a championship banner for their 2012 NWAACC championships.
No alcohol
Peninsula College is encouraging soccer fans to bring their barbecues to the campus and tailgate before Saturday’s doubleheader, starting at 11 a.m.
However, fans may not consume alcoholic beverages while tailgating.
“Please remember that alcohol is only permitted on our campus during special events and in designated areas,” Chapman said in an email Thursday afternoon.
“This is not one of those occasions, so no alcohol is permitted during the tailgating of P.C. events at this time.”
