SPORTS: Peninsula College splits men’s and women’s basketball games with Olympic

PORT ANGELES — Sequim graduate Ryan Rutherford broke the Peninsula College men’s basketball single-game scoring record Saturday night.

Rutherford scorched the nets with 41 points to spark the Pirates to a 105-83 drubbing of Olympic in the first NWAACC North Division game of the season.

Both the men’s and women’s teams began league play Saturday.

The Peninsula women’s team lost its conference opener 69-59 to Olympic.

Rutherford, though, seemingly couldn’t miss a shot.

He was 21-of-24 overall in shooting, including six 3-pointers.

Olympic’s Ary Webb, another Sequim graduate, shot lights out as well, finishing the night with 29 points to keep the Rangers (0-1, 2-6) within striking distance.

Jason Gamblin added 24 points and 16 rebounds for Peninsula (1-0, 4-6) while Trevant Musgrow had 14 points and five assists.

The 105 points is the most a Peninsula team has scored since Nov. 26, 2005, when the Pirates beat Western Montana JV 108-82.

The Pirates broke the century mark four times that season.

“We did some things very well tonight,” Peninsula coach Peter Stewart said.

“It’s nice to start the conference season 1-0. There are only three to four teams in the North Division with a 1-0 record.”

Olympic women 69, Peninsula 59

The Peninsula women (0-1, 1-8) held tough throughout but simply couldn’t buy a break to get the win.

Emily Garner led the Pirates with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Neomi Carter scored 11 while Jasmine Jackson chipped in 11 and she also hauled down eight boards for the Pirates.

Both teams travel to Bellevue on Wednesday.
