SPORTS: Peninsula College soccer teams sweep Tacoma

TACOMA — The Peninsula College men’s and women’s soccer teams tuned up for the playoffs by beating Tacoma.

Both teams won by shutouts as the men and women blanked the Titans by identical 3-0 scores.

“This was a tough game for us,” Peninsula men’s soccer coach Andrew Chapman said.

“On a very wet and muddy field it was hard to get any flow to the game. We struggled in the first half but in the 65th minute we were able to finally break them down.”

Omar Ambrocio, Henrique Noujeimi and Daniel Gonzalez scored the goals for the Pirates while Alex Martinez, Erick Urzua and Aaron Jeffery each had an assist.

The Pirates outshot the Titans 13-9.

Goalkeeper Guilherme Avelar had four saves in the game and recorded his eighth shutout of the season.

Record-breaking scorer Briana Afoa had one of the three goals for the women’s team while Kendra Miner and Morgan Atchley had the others.

Miner got the party going quickly with her goal coming at the 7-minute mark.

Assists came from Deidra Woodward, Jordan Dinneen and Emilia Stefanko.

The Pirates next play at Olympic on Wednesday with the women’s game starting at 1 p.m. and the men’s match beginning at 3 p.m.
