SPORTS: Peninsula College soccer teams sweep Columbia Basin

PASCO — The Peninsula Pirates opened the NWAACC league season on a good note by blanking Columbia Basin 1-0.

Alex Martinez scored the winning goal for the Pirates in the 65th minute on an assist by Henrique Noujeimi.

“This was a very intense game,” Peninsula coach Andrew Chapman said.

“Columbia Basin is a very good squad. It was tough to get into the flow, being 93 degrees during the game.”

The Pirates out-shot the Hawks 8-5.

Peninsula goalkeeper Guilherme Avelar earned the shutout.

“Guilherme had a great game, and saved a penalty kick in the 83rd minute that would have tied the game.”

The Pirates, 1-0 in the West Division and 5-1 on the season, next will host Skagit Valley on Wednesday at 4 p.m.

Skagit Valley, of the North Division, is 2-2 on the year.
