SPORTS: Peninsula College soccer teams sweep Columbia Basin

PASCO — The Peninsula Pirates opened the NWAACC league season on a good note by blanking Columbia Basin 1-0.

Alex Martinez scored the winning goal for the Pirates in the 65th minute on an assist by Henrique Noujeimi.

“This was a very intense game,” Peninsula coach Andrew Chapman said.

“Columbia Basin is a very good squad. It was tough to get into the flow, being 93 degrees during the game.”

The Pirates out-shot the Hawks 8-5.

Peninsula goalkeeper Guilherme Avelar earned the shutout.

“Guilherme had a great game, and saved a penalty kick in the 83rd minute that would have tied the game.”

The Pirates, 1-0 in the West Division and 5-1 on the season, next will host Skagit Valley on Wednesday at 4 p.m.

Skagit Valley, of the North Division, is 2-2 on the year.

Women’s Soccer

Peninsula 5, Columbia Basin 0

PASCO — Briana Afoa scored a hat trick to spark the Pirates to the easy West Division victory Saturday.

Also scoring goals for the Pirates were Emilia Stefanko and Morgan Atchley.

Afoa and Stefanko also earned assists along with Annie Armstrong and Sydney Bullington.

Denae Brooks recorded the shutout.

The Pirates, 1-0 in the West Division and undefeated at 5-0 for the season, next host Skagit Valley on Wednesday at 2 p.m.

Skagit Valley is 1-2-2 for the year.
