TUKWILA — The Peninsula College men’s and women’s soccer teams had a run for the money against the Bellevue Bulldogs but still prevailed in NWAACC action Wednesday.
The Port Angeles teams both played at Starfire Complex in Tukwila. The Pirate men nipped Bellevue 1-0 and the women won 2-0.
While the Pirates’ high-scoring offenses were held in check their defenses clamped down on the Bulldogs.
In the men’s game, Daniel Gonzalez had the Pirates’ only goal as he scored in the 56th minute on a Zac Newton assist.
Guilherme Avelar recorded the shutout for the Pirates.
The Pirates outshot the Bulldogs 21-4.
“We didn’t play a very inspired game today,” Peninsula coach Andrew Chapman said.
“We went through the motion, and lucky for us that was good enough for the win.
“Saturday against Highline will be a huge game for us, and hopefully we got this ugly game out of our system.”
Saturday’s game starts at 2:15 p.m.
Highline sits in second place in the NWAACC West Division at 4-3-1 in conference and 7-3-2 overall while the Pirates are 11 points ahead in the West at 8-0-0 and 16-1-0 with 24 conference points to Highline’s 13.
The Bulldogs fell to 0-5-2, 1-8-2.
Women’s Soccer
The nationally 15th-ranked Peninsula women, meanwhile, shut down Bellevue 2-0 to improve to 10-1-0 in conference and 15-1-0 overall.
The West Division second-place Bulldogs fell to 6-3-1, 8-4-1.
Bellevue now is 11 points behind the Pirates, 30 points to 19.
The Pirates will host third-place Highline (4-3-3, 6-4-4 for 15 conference points) this Saturday at noon at Wally Sigmar Field.
On Wednesday, Denae Brooks recorded the shutout against the Bellevue Bulldogs.
Annie Armstrong scored Peninsula’s first goal at 22 minutes while Ashlyn Frizzelle scored the second at 87 minutes.
Briana Afoa had the assist of the first goal while Briana Estrellado assisted in the second.
