SEATTLE — DeShaun Freeman sparked the Peninsula College men’s basketball team to a road win over Shoreline and a No. 2 seed in the NWAACC tournament this coming weekend.
The Pirates, 13-3 in the North Division and 18-7 overall, beat Shoreline 80-67 in a snow makeup game Sunday evening.
Peninsula, which has won three games in a row, will face Yakima Valley at 10 a.m. on Saturday in the first round of the tourney at Toyota Center in Tri-Cities.
Yakima is 8-6 for third place in the East Division and 15-10 overall.
Shoreline fell to 6-10 and 13-13 in the North and overall, respectively.
Peninsula needed Sunday’s win to secure second place and the second seed, coach Lance Von Vogt said.
“We did a great job of winning on the road against a tough team,” he said.
Freeman had a monster game with 29 points, 15 rebounds (six on offensive boards) and 14 of 22 shooting from the field.
“The key was that we played as a team and defended well, especially in the first half,” Von Vogt said.
“We set the tone for the game. The guards got the ball to Freeman, who was very active around the basket.
“He got some shots when we needed them.”
Also scoring in double figures were Mitrell Clark with 16 and Thad Vinsonwith 14.
Sammeon Waller had a triple six with six points, six steals and six assists.
Jerry Johnson, a 6-foot-10 center from Ocean Shores, came off the bench to dish out six assists in the game.
The Pirates led 40-31 at halftime.
Peninsula still is one starter short.
Freshman starter Anthony Williams, a shooting forward, has missed at least three games because of an ankle injury.
“We put him in the game to see if he could go but he didn’t last long,” Von Vogt said.
“We’re hoping he will be ready to go this weekend.”

SEATTLE — The Pirates ended their season with the road loss.
The Dolphins improved to 3-13 and 7-17 on the year while the Pirates ended the year at 2-14, 5-20 despite 19 points, nine rebounds and five assists from Port Angeles product Danika Goodwin.
Jasmine Jackson added 11 points.
Gnanamani Hooyman sank a game-high 22 points for Shoreline while teammate Kylie Williams scored 21.
