PORT ANGELES — Three players scored in double figures to keep the Peninsula College men’s basketball team in the hunt for the NWAACC North Division title.
The Pirates, 17-7 overall and 12-3 in league, held off Everett (3-18, 3-11) 75-68 in their final home game of the season Monday night.
Peninsula finished the regular season perfect at home at 9-0.
“It’s tremendous to have a home-court advantage,” Peninsula coach Lance Von Vogt said.
Monday’s game wasn’t pretty but the Pirates did what they had to to stay in the chase of the North Division title.
“We have been playing almost an NBA schedule, playing a game every other day, and a lot of them have been on the road,” Von Vogt said.
“I think the guys were mentally exhausted tonight. We had 18 turnovers and most of them were unearned. They weren’t pressing us.”
The Pirates average 11.5 turnovers a game.
“The key to the game was that we just found a way to win,” Von Vogt said.
The Pirates started the contest one-half game behind Bellevue for the division championship and will end up either a game back or a half-game ahead in their final regular-season game at Shoreline on Wednesday night.
Peninsula came out on fire against Everett, leading 10-0 after 4 minutes but it wasn’t long when the Pirates ran out of gas.
Everett got on a roll, getting close at halftime and getting within two points late in the game.
But the Pirates, who were 11 of 13 in free throws for the game, hit them down the stretch to ice the game.
Thad Vinson tied for game scoring honors with Everett’s Aaron Matzen for 23 points each while DeShaun Freeman canned 17 and Sammeon Waller swished in 16 for the Pirates.
Freeman also had a game-high 15 rebounds while Mitrell Clark had seven assists and Waller earned four steals.

PORT ANGELES — Everett was too much for teh Peninsula women in their final home game of the season Monday night.
Everett led 39-25 at halftime and never looked back.
Everett had five players in double figures with Anna Work leading the way with 22 points and three steals.
Danika Goodwin led everybody with 24 points and 17 rebounds while Callie Monfrey added 10 points.
The Pirates finish the season at Shoreline on Wednesday.
