SPORTS: Paint & Carpet Barn wins softball title; First Federal wins Babe Ruth championship

PORT ANGELES — Paint & Carpet Barn shrugged off an early challenge to claim the Babe Ruth Major 12U softball championship with a 13-3 victory over Tranco Transmissions at Lincoln Park.

With the win Thursday, Paint & Carpet capped a perfect season with a 15-0 record.

Tranco scored one run in the first inning on a single and stolen bases by Kyrsten McGuffey.

Paint & Carpet took the lead with Emma and Summer Olsen and Jada Cargo scoring runs.

Tranco knotted the game at 3-all in the third, as McGuffey and Zoe Smithson scored, but after that it was all Paint & Carpet Barn.

Starting pitcher Aeverie Politika earned the win and also hit a home run to help her cause.

“It was tough to get on the bases with Politika pitching 13 strikeouts and only walking one,” said Tranco coach Christine Halberg.

Brooklyn Alton finished with two hits for Paint & Carpet Barn.

Smithson walked and stole a base for Tranco.

Tranco’s defense was strong for most of the game with infielders Smithson, Camille Stensgard and Emi Halberg and McGuffey at pitcher combining to make six put outs at first base.

“Later in the game in the fourth inning, Aiesha Mathis had a great catch in left center,” Halberg said.

“This game was definitely one of our stronger defensive games against a great team with a lot of experience.

“PCB finished strong offensively and Politika definitely controlled the game. The girls had fun and that’s what’s important.”
