SPORTS: North Olympic 10U softball team captures state championship

HOQUIAM — The North Olympic 10U Junior Babe Ruth softball team captured the state championship by pounding Ellensburg 25-13 on Sunday.

The 10U team joins two other North Olympic squads that won state titles. The 14U and 16U teams claimed state titles Saturday.

Ellensburg needed to beat North Olympic twice to advance to the regionals but couldn’t get past the first game.

The final game was tied twice, at 4-4 and 9-9, before Port Angeles left Ellensburg back in the dust.

North Olympic had also beat Ellensburg 19-4 on Saturday.

The regional championships start July 22 in Meridian, Idaho for all three North Olympic teams.

Meanwhile, the North Olympic Cal Ripken 12U baseball team finishes preparations for the state tournament that starts Thursday in Moses Lake.

In pool play, Olympic will meet Warden at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, followed by games Friday against Cashmere at 9 a.m. and against Ferndale at 2 p.m.
