PORT ANGELES — In a tough defensive battle Tuesday night, the Port Angeles boys soccer team was shut out by the North Kitsap Vikings 3-0.
The teams were tied at halftime 0-0 as both teams were stellar defensively.
“We played really tough defense in the first half especially,” Port Angeles coach Chris Saari said.
The Vikings, however, out-shot the Riders 30-16, though Port Angeles freshman goalkeeper Jack Doryland defended well with 19 saves.
Anthony Brandon earned offensive player of the game honors for Port Angeles while Joey Pohl and Svetlio Hurd were defensive and transition standouts, respectively, according to Saari.
As the game progressed, the Riders (1-4 overall) broke down defensively to allow the Vikings scores in the 46th, 57th and 70th minutes of the contest.
“We’ve got a pretty young team this year and need to learn how to play the full 80 minutes,” Saari said.
Next up, the Riders travel to Bremerton on Thursday.

ROCHESTER — Juan Beltran scored both goals as the Spartans dominated the Southwest Washington League game to improve to 2-0 in league and 2-1 ovrall.
Rochester scored a desperation goal with 40 seconds left in the contest to make it appear to be a closer game than it was.
It was 1-0 at halftime with Beltran scoring in the 16th minute on as assist by Fernando Hernandez in a throw-in play.
Beltran scored the deciding goal in the 46th minute on an assist by Jose Perry.
The Spartans next host Toledo-Winlock on Thursday.
Kingston 2, Port Townsend 1
KINGSTON — The Eagles scored the winning goal in the 64th minute in an otherwise evenly played Olympic League match Tuesday.
Port Townsend, 1-1 in league and 2-1 overall, tied the game with 2 minutes left in the first half on a goal by Harrison Hodgson.
Sam Selisch had the assist.
Kingston outshot the Redskins 9-7.
Goalkeeper Ethan Berg earned six saves for Port Townsend.
The Redskins next play at Fife in a nonleague game Friday.
Girls Golf Port Angeles 96, North Mason 18
PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders won their first match of the year (1-1, 1-2) in easy fashion in Stablefored scoring at Peninsula Golf Club on Tuesday.
Tracie DuPuis earned medalist honors with a Stableford score of 25 for the nine holes, finishing just ahead of teammate Ev Greer, who scored 24.
“Tracie and Ev are pretty evenly matched,” coach Mike DuPuis said.
Both players are seniors.
Veteran Lauren Coventon scored 19 in her first match of the year while Anilis Pena scored 15 and Madison Baumann had 13 for the Riders.
Port Angeles next hosts Port Townsend on March 31.
Boys Golf Port Angeles 48, North Mason 23
PORT ANGELES — Team co-captains Jordan Negus, a sophomore, and junior Ben Wetzler finished 1-2 to spark the Roughriders at Peninsula Golf Club on Tuesday.
Negus scored 14 Stableford points and had a course score of 40 on nine holds to earn medalist honors while Wetzler had 11 points and a course score of 43 for his low round of the year.
Negus had a birdie and four pars in the nine holes.
Port Angeles is 1-1 in the Olympic League and overall.
“Our co-captains truly led by example today,” coach Mark Mitrovich said.
“They showed strong leadership in their play, and etiquette on the course.”
Mitrovich is expecting big things from Negus, who has been steady all year.
Two freshmen finished third and fourth for the Riders while a sophomore was fifth.
Terrance Stevenson took fourth with three pars and a score of 45, good for nine points while Garrett Payton scored 46, had his first birdie of the year and finished with eight points.
Bryan Schlinkmann, a sophomore, shot 48 for a Stableford score of six points.
“Eight of our 11 players shot in the 40s,” Mitrovich said.
Baseball North Mason 10, Port Townsend 3
BELFAIR — The Redskins were held to three hits in the Olympic League game Monday.
Port Townsend led 1-0 early but the Bulldogs scored eight runs combined in the third and fourth innings to put the game away.
Ryan Aumock (0-2) started the game on the mound, striking out four and walking five while allowing four hits in 3 2/3 innings.
Cameron Robinson, Kyle Kelly and Devin Courtney had a hit each for the Redskins.
Robinson and Kelly each scored a run.
The Redskins next play at Kingston on Wednesday and host Sequim on Friday.
Girls Tennis Sequim 6, North Mason 1
BELFAIR — The Wolves won their first match of the year on the road Friday.
Sequim swept singles with Kyla Hall, Serena Okamoto and Jessica Defilippo all winning.
The doubles teams of Katrina Chan/Stacy Hanson, Hanah Smith/Ellen Cain and Calli Norman/Hillary Smith also won for the Wolves.
Sequim only lost the No. 3 doubles match.
