SPORTS: North Kitsap beats Port Angeles in tennis

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles boys tennis team is a little green this fall.

The loaded North Kitsap Vikings made sure to dish out some valuable experience on the way to topping the Roughriders 6-1 in a nonleague affair Wednesday.

“I knew that North was going to be really tough because they returned 10 out of 11 guys on varsity and they are all seniors,” Rider coach Brian Gundersen said.

“We have some new guys trying to gain some experience and that showed up today.”

Senior Jordan Negus was the lone Rider to come out of the matchup with a victory after topping North Kitsap’s Jacob Coover 6-0, 7-5 in No. 2 singles play.

That performance earned him player of the match honors from coach Gundersen.

“Jordan played a lot of doubles early last year and then switched over to singles late in the season,” Gundersen said.

“He hit the ground running this year and I’m excited about what he can accomplish this year.”

The rest of the Riders managed to win just one set combined in the other six matches as they warmed up for league play.
