Sports: Neah Bay wins first game of state playoffs

SPOKANE — The Neah Bay Red Devils have moved one step closer to a state title after the first day of the Class B boys state basketball tournament, beating Riverside Christian 58-48 Wednesday morning.

Henry Cross scored 28 points and grabbed 10 rebounds on top of shooting 12-for-12 from the free-throw line and 2-for-2 from the behind the 3-point arc.

Neah Bay led 25-17 at the half, but saw its cushion slip to just two points up 34-32 after three quarters.

“In the third quarter we really missed some opportunities,”‘ Smith said.

“Henry was really big in the fourth quarter.”

“We knew they had two really good guards,” Smith said of Chris and Trevor Pynch both of which scored 15 points.

Trevor the eldest of the Pynchs’ had five turnovers.

“We kept things close, kept it packed in and never gave them an easy shot.”

The Red Devils (22-1) have a tough contest ahead of them today when they meet Republic (24-3), but have a chance at making its own history.
