This playoff weekend for high school sports starts tonight with Neah Bay in a loser-out match at the Tri-
District 1B volleyball tournament.
Port Angeles, Sequim and Crescent also play in district or tri-district volleyball action while the Sequim girls soccer team played in a loser-out game Wednesday and could be playing in the district tournament Saturday.
Area girls divers and swimmers will compete in the district meet Friday and Saturday while cross country runners open state competition with the championship meet for all classifications set for Saturday.
In addition, football teams Chimacum learned its crossover opponent and Neah Bay its playoff opponent Wednesday.
The Cowboys will host Coupeville in their final game of the season in West Central District crossover action at Memorial Field in Port Townsend on Saturday at 7 p.m.
The Red Devils, meanwhile, start their playoff run against Lopez on Saturday at Oak Harbor starting at 4 p.m.
Neah Bay and Lopez’s game is for seeding only. The Red Devils will start the defense of their 2011 state championship in two weeks if they win as expected Saturday.
The Neah Bay volleyball team, meanwhile, starts the whole playoff weekend off tonight in a Tri-District loser-out match with Lopez at Coupeville High School starting at 4 p.m.
If the Red Devils win tonight, they will play Christian Faith in the semifinals Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Mount Vernon Christian.
Crescent, the North Olympic League champion, has a bye tonight and will play the winner between Providence Classical Christian and Rainier Christian on Saturday at 9 a.m. in the semifinals at Mount Vernon Christian.
Semifinal winners earn state berths while the four semifinal losers will battle for the final state spot.
The Roughriders open 2A district volleyball play against White River at Franklin Pierce High School in Tacoma in a loser-out match at 5 p.m. Friday.
The Port Angeles-White River winner will play Sequim in the district semifinals Saturday at 10 a.m. The semifinal winners earn state berths while the four losers square off for the final state berths.
If the Sequim soccer team beats Orting on Wednesday in a 2A district play-in game, the Wolves will take on Lindbergh at 10 a.m. at Highline Stadium in Burien for a winner-to-state, loser-out game.
The girls swimming and diving West Central District meet is scheduled for Hazen High School in Renton on Friday and Saturday.
The preliminaries start at 10 a.m. Friday and the finals begin at 11 a.m. Saturday.
The big meet, though, is Saturday as the top cross country runners in the state jockey for individual and team trophies at the state championships at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco.
Action starts at 9 a.m.
Kyle Tupper of Port Angeles has the best chance of area runners to place high as he captured fourth place at the 2A West Central District championships last weekend.
