SPORTS: Neah Bay varsity boys basketball team nips Port Angeles junior varsity in overtime

PORT ANGELES — Drexler Doherty scorched the nets for 25 points to spark the Neah Bay varsity boys basketball team to a nonleague win over the Port Angeles JV team Wednesday night.

The Class 1B Red Devils beat the youthful 3A Roughriders 63-58 in overtime.

The teams tied 56-all in regulation when Hayden McCartney of Port Angeles scored with two seconds left to send the game into overtime.

“Most of the way, the game went back and forth,” Port Angeles JV coach Mike Pondexter said.

Three Red Devils scored in double figures as Robert Moss sank 18 points and Cody Bartlett added 11.

Tanner Phair led the Riders with 17 points while McCartney had 11.

“One of the key differences was the offensive rebounds by Neah Bay,” Pondexter said.

Moss hurt the Riders on the boards last year, and so Port Angeles played him tough.

“We played Robert pretty well but we couldn’t keep him off the boards,” Pondexter said. “He would rebound and we would foul him.”

Moss was 10-of-13 from the foul line while the Red Devils were 17-of-27 overall from the line.

The Riders were only 3-of-10 from the free-throw line.
