At least that’s the way it seemed as the youthful Neah Bay volleyball team shut down Crescent 3-0 to repeat as North Olympic League champion Thursday.
The Red Devils, with no seniors on their team, beat the Loggers 26-24, 25-23, 25-21 in a hard-fought match for the league title.
“Neah Bay came out on fire and played their hearts out,” Crescent coach Alex Baker said. “They are a young squad that played very well.
“The bottom line is Neah Bay came out and played well. It’s the best I have seen them play all year.”
Neah Bay coach Sharon Kanichy said the Red Devils just didn’t want to give up the league championship.
“Our girls have improved every game,” she said.
Neah Bay improved to 4-1 in league and 7-2 overall while Crescent fell to 3-2, 9-3.
Both teams have one regular season match left, each against rival Clallam Bay.
The Loggers play at Clallam Bay on Tuesday while the Red Devils host the Bruins on Thursday.
Cherish Moss earned five kills for Neah Bay while teammate Courtney Winck had seven blocks and a serving ace.
“Courtney had a monster game at the net,” Kanichy said.
“She got all of her blocks in the first game, and then Crescent didn’t hit at her for the rest of the night.”
Cierra Moss served an ace for the Red Devils while Rebecca Thompson also had an ace.
For Crescent, Jandi Frantz had seven blocks and seven kills.
“Jandi had a huge night for us,” Baker said.
Mikela Williams also was strong at the net with five blocks and a kill. She also was 9-of-10 for serving.
Sara Moore was perfect in serving with a 12-for-12 day with two aces, and she also had a kill and a tip.
“Both teams fought really hard,” Baker said.
Port Angeles 3, Kingston 0
KINGSTON — The Roughriders stayed in the running for a top-three playoff berth with the Olympic League win Thursday night.
Port Angeles won 25-8, 25-8, 25-23 to improve to 6-1 in league and 9-4 overall.
The Riders conclude the regular season at home against league-leading North Kitsap on Tuesday.
A victory against the undefeated Vikings would give the league title to the Riders.
Otherwise, a loss probably would drop Port Angeles to third place with two losses if Sequim wins out (with one loss).
Against Kingston, Taylyn Jeffers had five kills while Chloe Johnston scooped up 14 digs and had four aces for the Riders.
Kiah Jones had a banner night with 10 digs, three kills, three aces and a block while setter Emily Drake had 15 assists, four digs and three aces.
Lauren Norton was 11-for-11 in serving with three aces, three digs and two kills as Danielle Rutherford earned four digs and three kills.
Forks 3, Rainier 1
FORKS — The Spartans (7-6, 9-7) had a well-earned SWL-Evergreen Division victory, winning by the scores of 25-16, 22-25, 25-12, 25-18 on Thursday.
“It was a really good win for us,” Forks coach Jennifer Daman said.
Casey Williams led the team with 14 kills while Raven McCann had eight kills of her own.
Sydney Christenson had six aces for the Spartans while Jillian Raben had 28 assists on the night.
Forks travels to Montesano on Monday in a league match.
Sequim 3, Olympic 1
SEQUIM — The Wolves had their senior night against the Olympic Trojans, winning by the scores of 25-20, 21-25, 25-16, 25-20.
“We still need to work on our consistent serving,” Sequim coach Jennie Webber-Heilman said. “We can also work on our communicating.”
Senior Maddy Zbaraschuk had eight kills, five aces and served 18-for-21 while Haleigh added 12 kills, three blocks, two aces and 10 digs for the Wolves.
Taylor Dalkan was a big help on offense, adding up 33 assists.
Sequim travels to Klahowya on Tuesday for its final league match.
Girls Soccer Kingston 2, Port Angeles 0
KINGSTON — The Roughriders came out flat after their big win against archrival Sequim on Tuesday.
Port Angeles has already secured a playoff berth.
“The story of the game is that after three emotional wins, especially against Sequim, we came out flat,” coach Scott Moseley said.
“The girls were improved with good passing but overall it just wasn’t there for us.”
The Buccaneers led 1-0 at halftime and outshot the Riders 17-6.
Goalkeeper Kearsten Cox was named defensive player of the game for Port Angeles with 12 saves.
“Some of the saves were very spectacular,” Moseley said.
Lauren Corn was named transition player of the game.
The Riders, 3-4 in league and 7-6 overall, concludes league action on Tuesday at home against North Kitsap. The seniors will be honored at this game.
Girls Swimming Port Angeles 126, North Kitsap 57
PORT ANGELES — North Kitsap was no match for the Riders on their senior night as Port Angeles dominated to claim an undefeated 7-0 record and the Olympic League Champions.
Nine seniors swam their final home meet as the Riders produced nine season best times in their individual events, placing first in 10 out of 12 events.
Senior Tori Bock was a double-event winner in the 200-yard freestyle and the 500 free as well as Tracie Macias also winning the 200 I.M. and the 100 butterfly.
Seniors swimming their final Roughrider home meet include team captains Tori Bock and Noelle Ciaciuch and teammates Sandy Gudgel, Keely Gustin, Tanesha Jackson, Teresa Knittle, Jenna Moore, Rebecca Ramsey and Cassidy Turner.
Port Angeles will next host the Divisional Invitational at William Shore Memorial Pool on Tuesday.
Diving starts at 12:30 p.m. and swimmig will start at 3:30 p.m.
