PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Yacht Club and the Clallam County Family YMCA are helping co-host the national high school sailing championships in Port Angeles Harbor this weekend.
There will be 20 teams with 200 sailors from all over the country converging in Port Angeles for the Mallory Cup on Friday through Sunday.
“We will have teams from all over the East Coast, including New York, Connecticut and Rhode Island, from the Great Lakes area and from San Francisco, San Diego and Los Angeles,”‘ said Bill Roberds, past commodore of the Port Angeles Yacht Club and “avid sailor.”
Bainbridge Island, which won the Northwest Interscholastic Sailing Association (ISSA) regional championship last weekend in Port Angeles, will represent Washington.
Bainbridge beat out several teams, including host Port Angeles, at regionals to qualify for the lone Northwest berth to the Mallory Cup races.
The Roughriders still have a shot at competing this weekend if one of the other 20 qualifying teams can’t make the trip to Port Angeles.
Vanguard 15 sailing boats, provided by the YMCA, Sail Orcas and San Juan Sailing Foundation, will be used in the national races.
Practice races will be held Friday in the harbor while competition starts at 10 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday and go throughout both days. The racing ends at 4 p.m. Sunday.
