SPORTS: Local 155 bowled over by Laurel Lanes in Port Angeles city Cal Ripken championship

PORT ANGELES — In a dynamite game Thursday night, Laurel Lanes claimed the 2011 Cal Ripken championship by defeating previously unbeaten Local 155 3-0 in a one-hitter.

It figured to be a pitching duel, and it was a Laurel’s Tyrus Beckett matched against Local’s Janson Pederson.

The game featured only one earned run as both pitchers cruised.

Pederson recorded nine strikeouts and gave up only two walks before yielding to the pitch-count rule.

Beckett threw a complete game on the same number of pitches, yielding only a single to Anders Chapman while striking out 15 and walking no one.

After a scoreless first inning, Laurel scored one in the second as Eli Britt walked, Brady Shimko was safe on an error and Andrew Pena singled Britt home.

Laurel added one in the third as Rayha Munyagi singled and stole second, and Caleb West singled him home with a shot up the middle.

The final run was scored when Laurel’s Beckett walked, and as he later attempted to steal second the Local catcher air-mailed the ball into center field.

Local finished the season 17-1 while Laurel Lanes finished 15-3.
