SPORTS: Kyle Tupper of Port Angeles captures league cross country title; Sequim boys take second, Port Angeles girls claim third

SEQUIM — Kyle Tupper of Port Angeles continued his outstanding cross country season by winning the Olympic League championship at Cedars at Dungeness Golf Course.

Tupper claimed top honors for area runners while Adrian Clifford was the best Sequim runner, taking fifth place.

Class 1A Port Townsend, meanwhile, had a male and a female runner capture third place each in the 2A varsity races.

The top four teams and 20 individuals advance to the 2A West Central District meet, the Westside Classic, on Oct. 27 at American Lake Golf Course in Lakewood.

Both Sequim and Port Angeles qualified their boys and girls teams by finishing in the top four in the 5-kilometer, 3.1-mile events.

Both Port Townsend teams automatically advanced to the 1A district meet Oct. 27.

In the boys race, Kingston took first with Sequim second and Port Angeles fourth. The Redskins were eighth in the nine-team event.

The Roughriders had three boys finish in the 2A top 20 with Tupper winning the meet in 16 minutes, 25 seconds, Brendan Dennis 11th and Peter Butler 19th.

Clifford led four Sequim runners in the 2A top 20 as he took fourth in 16:59, followed by teammates Mikey Cobb, seventh; Peter Ohnstad, 13th; and C.K. Daniels, 17th.

Port Townsend’s Xavier Frank crashed the 2As’ party by claiming third in 16:49 while teammate Ryan Clarke, a junior, took 10th overall.

Kingston won with a score of 71 while Sequim was close behind with 74, Port Angeles had 108 and Port Townsend had 172.

In the girls race, meanwhile, North Kitsap — ranked No. 2 in state — easily won the meet by scoring 26 points and taking three of the top four spots.

Kingston, ranked eighth in state, was runner-up with 53 points.

The Riders were third with 61 while Port Townsend took fourth with 116 and Sequim finished fifth with 134.

Port Townsend senior Brittany Grant was the best area runner as she took third place in 19:15.

The Riders, meanwhile, had six runners finish in the top 20 for 2A as Elizabeth Stevenson claimed fifth place in 20:04, followed by teammates Dusti Lucas, eighth; Annika Pdederson, 12th; Willow Suess, 16th; Bailey Reader, 17th; and Dasha Porter, 20th.

The Wolves’ Emily Webb also finished in the top 20, taking 18th place.
