PORT ANGELES — Big Easton Napiontek looks like he’s never taken any time off for boys basketball.
The 6-foot-8 senior scored 23 points and hauled down nine rebounds for Port Angeles against Olympic League favorite Kingston on Friday night.
It wasn’t enough, though, as the Buccaneers escaped with a 52-49 victory to open league play.
Napiontek had 18 points and 15 rebounds in a season-opening win against W.F. West earlier in the week and appears to be an emerging force down low for the Roughriders.
“Easton is playing really well right now,” coach Wes Armstrong said.
To win consistently, though, the Riders (0-1 in league, 1-1 overall) need at least two players scoring in double figures, according to Armstrong.
“Hopefully, we can come together as a team soon.”
Kingston (1-0, 1-1) was ahead only 14-13 at the end of the first quarter but a 17-10 second-period advantage gave it a solid 31-23 lead at halftime.
“We had a terrible second quarter,” Armstrong said. “We had multiple turnovers which were turned into easy transition points for them.”
The Riders were down by 10 early in the third quarter but were in the position to tie the game with 7 seconds left to play.
But Port Angeles couldn’t come up with the basket or the free throws that would have knotted the score.
“We’re pleased we played Kingston tough, but we’re hoping to hold serve on our home court,” Armstrong said.
“You have to give Kingston credit because they came in with a good game plan.”
The Riders next host North Mason in league action Tuesday night.

SEQUIM — Jayson Brocklesby sank 23 points and Corbin Webb added a tough-fought 11 points as the Wolves opened Olympic League play on a high note Friday night.
“It was a great team effort by our kids,” coach Greg Glasser said.
“We got in foul trouble early but our kids came off the bench and stepped up for us.”
The Trojans (0-1, 1-1) outscored the Wolves (1-0, 2-0) 17-5 in the first quarter, but Sequim outscored Olympic 38-17 in the middle two periods to take control of the game.
The Trojans keyed on standout player Webb, who “had to fight for every point he scored,” Glasser said.

SILVERDALE — The Redskins stayed with the Eagles in the first half but couldn’t hold on in the second half.
Klahowya (1-0, 1-2) led only 18-17 at halftime but outscored Port Townsend (0-1, 0-1) 36-20 in the last two periods to run away with the Olympic League victory.

QUILCENE — Derrick Findley and Joel Williams scored 20 points each to spark the Loggers to a nonleague win Friday night.
Quilcene led 39-37 going into the final quarter but Crescent outscored the Rangers 10-5 the rest of the way for the final margin of victory.
Williams also pulled down 17 rebounds, had four steals and two blocked shots while Findley had eight rebounds and two blocked shots.
Gene Peppard grabbed 10 rebounds for Crescent.
Jacob Pleines led the Rangers with 18 points while Ethan Newman added 10.

CHIMACUM — Landon Cray and Quinn Eldridge combined for 33 points in a nonleague victory Thursday night.
The Class 1A Cowboys of the Nisqually League are now 2-0 after beating their second 2A Olympic League foe in a row.
Chimacum beat Klahowya 70-69 in overtime Tuesday night.
“The only reason we beat Klahowya is because we shot lights out in that game,” Chimacum coach Jim Eldridge.
“But [Thursday night] we played a real solid game defensively.”
Cray led all scorers with 17 points while Quinn Eldridge sank 16.
Andrew Urquhart and Riley Lindsey netted 15 points each for the Vikings.
The Cowboys led 29-17 at halftime and never looked back.
Chimacum next hosts Auburn Adventist on Monday in nonleague action.

KINGSTON — The Riders were dealt their first Olympic League loss in nearly three years Friday night, falling to the league favorites on the road.
Port Angeles led 22-19 at halftime but scored only six points in the third quarter.
“We struggled offensively in the third quarter,” coach Mike Poindexter said.
“We lost the confidence we had in the first half but we recovered it in the fourth quarter.”
Mariah Frazier and Maddy Hinrichs combined for 22 points in the game with Frazier the team leader with 12.
Kingston’s Lindsey Wicklein led everybody with 16.
Kingston now is 1-0 in league and 2-0 overall.
Port Angeles, which is coming off three straight outright Olympic League titles, is now 0-1 in league and 0-2 overall.

PORT TOWNSEND — The Redskins made too many mistakes to keep up with the Eagles in the opening Olympic League game for both teams Friday night.
“This was our first game of the year and it showed,” Port Townsend coach Randy Maag said. “We had a pile of turnovers and we couldn’t recover.”
The Eagles improved to 1-0 in league and 2-0 overall while the Redskins are 0-1, 0-1.
