PORT ORCHARD — The Port Angeles Roughriders had a strong showing at the nine-team South Kitsap Relays track and field meet on Saturday.

A school record fell despite being just the beginning of the second week of competition, and Port Angeles captured three individual championships.

“We had several athletes compete at an exceptional level,” Port Angeles coach Pat Durr said.

Jordan Norberg broke the Port Angeles school record while claiming first place in javelin with a throw of 168 feet, 7 inches.

Celebrating his birthday, Norberg also captured third place in pole vault with a height of 10 feet even and was 13th in discus with a throw of 93-09.

He won the long jump championship with a leap of 20 feet, 8.5 inches while he captured second in triple jump with a distance of 40-08.5 and third in javelin with a toss of a solid 155-10.

The other Port Angeles first place went to Tarah Erickson in girls pole vault with a height of 10-06.

She also was sixth in triple jump with a distance of 28-9.5.

PORT TOWNSEND — The Redskins won the battle of shots on goal but lost the war in nonleague action Saturday at Memorial Field.

The Redskins outshot the Cardinals 13-6 but lost 1-0.

“It took a missed off-sides call against Orting to break the scoreless draw,” Port Townsend coach Steve Shively said.

Orting’s Joaquin Moreno scored the winning goal off a Austin McKenzie cross in the 33rd minute.

The halftime score of 1-0 held up for the rest of the game.

“We had plenty of chances, yet we were unable to finish,” Shively said.

Strong shots from Port Townsend came from captains Dylan Holbrook and Luke Coppenrath, and Michael Shively, Harry Hodgson, John Reid, Max Meier and Brady Arthur.

Outstanding defensive performances were turned in by Michael Shively, Xavie Frank, Forrest Piatt, Ian Hadden and goalkeeper Brian LeMaster, Shively said.

The Redskins finish nonleague play Tuesday against Klahowya with both JV and varsity games starting at 3:30 p.m.

The Olympic League season begins Thursday with Class 1A Port Townsend at 2A powerhouse North Kitsap.
