Sports: Grieving Sequim All-Stars lose first tournament game; play for World Series berth today

SNOQUALMIE — With the death of a teammate on their minds, the Sequim Junior Little League fastpitch team lost 4-2 Wednesday, the team’s first loss of the state tournament.

South Everett broke a 1-1 tie with a three-run sixth inning, setting up a rematch for the state title today at 6 p.m.

Sequim (3-1) entered Wednesday’s game undefeated in the tournament and could have claimed the state crown with a win.

Instead, Sequim and South Everett (4-1) play with everything on the line today.

“There’s a lot of pressure on us and we’re going to win it for KayDee and that’s all that matters,” Sequim catcher Ashley Pearson said after Wednesday’s loss.

KayDee Campbell, a 13-year-old outfielder on the team, died Tuesday afternoon of injuries suffered in a car wreck on state Route 169 in Maple Valley after Saturday’s tournament game.

Sequim, which goes by the name Pyros (a combination of the regular-season Pirates and Expos teams) beat South Everett 5-2 Sunday; today’s meeting will be the third of the tournament between the two clubs.
