FORKS — The Forks wrestling team took a giant step toward the SWL-Evergreen Division wrestling championship after winning a double-dual meet Wednesday night.
The Spartans, ranked No. 17 in state on the 1A level, beat No. 10-ranked Elma 38-24.
Elma, like Forks, was undefeated in league going into the meet.
The Spartans also beat Montesano 44-21.
“Our kids wrestled very well,” Forks coach Bob Wheeler said.
“I am extremely proud of them for wrestling hard and not giving up. In both matches we only won eight of the 14 matches, but the scores aren’t especially close.
“What made the real difference is that in both of the dual matches we didn’t have a varsity wrestler who was pinned.
“Just to have that in one match is a great job. In two matches to not give up a pin has not happened for us in a very long time.”
Against Elma, Forks wrestlers earned three pins of their own.
Winning by a fall were Sebastian Morales at 106 pounds, Abasai Garcia at 145 and Eric Camacho at 170.
Camacho’s victory came in a pivotal match when he came from behind with the pin in the third and final round.
Winning by a major decision were Javier Contreras at 126 and Ricky Barragan at 138.
At 152 pounds, AC Parker won by decision in a very good come-from-behind victory while James Salazar won by decision at 160.
Heavyweight Miguel Morales won by forfeit.
The Spartans earned four pins against Montesano.
The six-point winners were Alvaro Ortiz at 120, Contreras at 126, James Salazar at 160 and Miguel Morales at 285.
The Spartans earned two major decisions, won by Sebastian Morales at 113 and Barragan at 138.
Taking forfeits were Tristen Williams at 106 and Joel Ward at 220.
The Spartans will be wrestling their final league match at home next Wednesday at 6 p.m. against league powerhouse Hoquiam.

Clallam Bay 49, Crescent 35
CLALLAM BAY — The Bruins had a true team effort with four players scoring in double figures and four crowded at the top in rebounding efforts in the North Olympic League game Wednesday night.
“I’m happy with our effort,” Clallam Bay coach Kelly Gregory said.
“It was one of our better all-around games, especially in the first half.”
The Bruins dominated the Loggers in the first half, leading 14-6 after one and 28-14 at halftime.
Ryan Willis shot a game-high 14 points for Clallam Bay while Kelly Gregory, the coach’s son, and Justin Welever swished in 12 points each and Kevin Hess netted 10.
On defense, Hess had a game-high nine rebounds while Willis and Matt Mohr grabbed eight each and Welever brought down seven.
The Bruins held the Loggers to single digits in every quarter except the fourth where Crescent had 12 points.
Crescent’s top player, Derrick Findley, was held to 10 points while Sage Fadness added nine.
Gregory said the Bruins had a player on Findley at all times, and sometimes two players.
“Casey Randall did a good job defending Findley,” Gregory said.
Randall, one of Clallam Bay’s smaller players, frustrated taller Findley with his quickness and being low to the ground, Gregory said.
The Bruins, now 2-1 in league and 4-5 overall, next will play at Neah Bay on Wednesday.
“Our goal is to get to the playoffs,” Gregory said.
Beating Crescent for the second time this year should go a long ways toward that goal.

KINGSTON — Henry English and KT Deam combined for 34 points to spark the Buccaneers (6-3, 8-5) to the Olympic League win Wednesday night.
English scored a game-high 18 while Deam added 16.
Caleb Treider had a team-high 14 for the Roughriders (2-8, 4-9) while hayden Gunderson added seven.
The Riders were held to 10 points in the first half, including just two in the second quarter.

SILVERDALE — Quintin Phillips paced the league-leading Trojans (9-1, 11-3) with 17 points, six rebounds, six steals and five assists in Olympic League action Wednesday night.
Skyler Coppenrath led the Redskins (1-9, 4-10) with 10 points as Olympic held Port Townsend to single digits in all four quarters.

CLALLAM BAY — The Bruins held off the Loggers right down to the wire in the North Olympic League contest Wednesday night.
“We came out aggressive on defense and stayed that way the entire game,” Clallam Bay coach Kathleen Winter said.
Clallam Bay’s Kyla Wilson hit a big 3-pointer towards the end of the game and both teams had a chance to score again but both teams were stopped by turnovers.
Inga Erickson had eight rebounds for Clallam Bay while Amanda Butler had six key rebounds.
Crescent’s Kellie Belford led all scorers with 10 points.
The Bruins, 1-2 in league and 6-4 overall, next will play Wednesday at Neah Bay.
The Bruins and Loggers have a rematch next Friday night at Crescent.

PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders remained undefeated in the Olympic League with a strong second half against the Buccaneers in Olympic League action Wednesday night.
The Bucs stayed with the Riders in the first half, trailing only 21-17 at intermission.
But Port Angeles (10-0, 10-3) lowered the boom in the second half, outscoring Kingston 36-10 to breeze to the win.
Bremerton remains a game behind the Riders in league at 9-1 and will be coming to Port Angeles for the big league showdown next Friday night, Jan. 25.
Against Kingston, four Riders scored in double figures as Mariah Frazier led the way with 16, Macy Walker netted 14, Bailee Jones scored 11 and Maddy Hinrichs added 10.
