FORKS — The Forks wrestling team dismantled Hoquiam 55-17 to capture the SWL-Evergreen Division dual-meet championship Wednesday night.
The Spartans finished league competition with a perfect 6-0 record and went 8-1 overall in dual matches.
Once again no Forks varsity wrestler was pinned in the Hoquiam match.
The Spartans won eight of the 12 contested matches, none by less than a major decision.
They earned five pins, a technical fall and two major decisions. They also were awarded two forfeits.
Earning pins were Garrett Brito at 106 pounds Kim Barragan at 113, Alan Ensastegui at 120, Javier Contreras at 126 and Gavin Castaneda at 182.
Joel Ward won by technical fall at 220 pounds while major decisions went to Ricky Barragan at 138 and James Salazar at 160.
Forfeits were given to Nanito Sanchez at 132 and Miguel Morales at 285.
Now the Spartans will compete in the district tournament in Elma on Feb. 2, and then will battle in the regionals Feb. 9.
The boys team will be at Hoquiam in regionals while the girls will be in Battle Ground.
Port Angeles close
to league title
SILVERDALE — It’s not official yet but the Roughriders definitely can hear the fat lady sing after beating Bremerton and Klahowya in Olympic League wrestling action.
Port Angeles ripped the Knights 51-27 on the road Tuesday night and then turned around and pounded the Eagles 52-24 there Wednesday night.
The Riders, 6-0 in league, had two dual meets left but the double-dual was against two teams having trouble with depth this year.
Port Angeles wrestled against Sequim and Port Townsend at Sequim on Thursday night (results not available by press time).
The Wolves and Redskins are two proud programs suffering through low numbers .
In addition, the flu has hit Port Townsend pretty hard the past couple of weeks.
Klahowya and Bremerton were expected to give the Riders their toughest competition this week in their four matches in three days.
The Riders got off to a strong start and then held off a rally at Klahowya on Wednesday.
The Riders are now 11-2 on the season.
They earned six pins, a major decision and two forfeits against the Eagles.
Earning pins were Tyler Gale at 106, Brady Anderson at 113, Josh Basden at 120, Brian Cristion at 170 Matt Robbins at 182 and Kyle La Fritz at 220.
Gavin Crain of Port Angeles won a major 11-2 decision over Devon Steele at 132.
Against Bremerton, the Riders had five pins. Winning by fall were Gale at 106, Ozzy Swagerty at 126, Cristion at 182, Robbins at 195 and La Fritz at 285.
In addition, Basden decisioned Cameron Dubos 9-2 at 120.
Port Townsend wrestling results
SILVERDALE — Klahowya picked on a flu-depleted Port Townsend team, winning 69-12 this past week.
“We got hit with the flu bad,” Port Townsend coach Steve Grimm said.
“There were only five total matches. All the other weights were forfeits by us because we didn’t have anybody.
“Our only win came from Jake Pokorney, who pinned his kid in the third round. He stepped up wrestling varsity for a sick Trevor Garrett.”
Port Townsend’s other six points came from a forfeit that Jesus Perales received at 195.
“We were missing everybody, and even the ones we had were sick and hacking,” Grimm said.
“After that match, we just needed to get healthy and bounce back.”
Port Townsend’s Hanna Welch won her JV match at 126 pounds by pin.
At the large Lynden tournament last weekend, Port Townsend’s Dillon Ralls captured second place at 138 pounds in the 16-man bracket tourney.
Ralls has wrestled at 145 all year but now has dropped down a weight class going into postseason.
He pinned two wrestlers on his way to the finals match.
In the finals, Ralls wrestled the state No.-5 ranked wrestler in Joey Walton, a state placer last year from Mount Baker.
In a thrilling match, Dillon started the third round down by five points before losing 21-18.
Still down by five with 7 seconds left, Dillon had Walton on his back looking for the pin.
Rall just missed the pin as time expired but in the end he received two points for the near pin to lose by three.
Earning fourth place for the Redskins were Shae Shoop at 106, Kade Wilford at 138, Trevor Garrett at 182 and Jesus Perales at 195.
In girls action at Lynden, Charity Jesionowski and Malia Henderson wrestled in a five-person, round-robin format with other girls their weight.
Henderson won all three of her matches and had a 24-second pin.
Jesionowski lost only one out of three matches. She also posted a 20-second pin.
