SPORTS: Forks wrestling team captures second at subregionals; other prep reports

ELMA — The Forks wrestling team captured second and had two individual champions at the SWL-Evergreen Division subregionals.

Host Elma won the seven-team tournament with 244.5 points while the Spartans were close behind with 205.

Forks will be sending 11 wrestlers to the regional tournament at Hoquiam High School on Saturday.

Spartan subregional champions were Javier Contreras at 126 pounds and Miguel Morales at 285.

Forks sent eight into the title matches with six claimed second place.

The runners-up included Sebastion Morales at 106, Alvaro Ortiz at 113, James Salazar at 160, Gavin Castaneda at 182, Joel Ward at 220 and Luke Loveless at 285, losing to heavyweight teammate Miguel Morales in the title match.

Other wrestlers punching tickets to the regionals were Garrett Brito at 106, third place, and fourth-place finishers Alan Ensastegui at 113 and Ricky Barragan at 138.

The Spartans also had three girls earn regional berths at subregionals in Elma.

The girls regionals are set for Battle Ground High School on Saturday.

At the subregionals, Tristen Williams captured third place at 106, Brooke Pederson claimed third at 145 and Cassy Schroeder took fourth at 112.

Sequim girls wrestling

ELMA — The Wolves sent three girls wrestlers to the subregionals at Elma High School with one advancing to the regionals, one named an alternate and one just missing the regional cut.

Kaylee Ditlefsen scored a 16-0 win and a 32-second pin to reach the finals at 130 pounds before losing to claim second place.

Sophia Cornell earned a second-round pin to take fifth place at 106 to qualify as an alternate to the regional tournament.

Emily Halverson wrestled at 124 and narrowly missed the cutoff to qualify for regionals.

The regionals are set for Battle Ground on Saturday.
